Week 5 and Ian is taking the class. We start with the ususal warm ups. As I look around the room some of the faces are becoming familiar although the name still evade me. The class is becoming more relaxed and chatty.
We start with a Samba and then on to a Merengue. This week the steps seem to be coming more naturally. I even have complimentary remarks from a few dance partners. That is not to say I am the Fred Astaire of latin dance. Ian was quick to bring me back to earth with a few pointers about my pigeon toed-technique. Apparently if you dance with your feet out it makes it easier for your partner to tread on them.
The highlight of this class had to be the dancing with tennis balls between our legs. Ian had us place a tennis ball between and knees and step backwards. This apartently would help us perfect our dance technique. More likely it will appear on Australias funniest home videos. My knees must be very knobbly as the ball just would not stay there. I spent most of the time chasing the ball and very little time stepping.
We finished with a Salsa, one of my favourite steps. It seems to be easier than the rest of Steps we have done. I partnered with a girl whose name I forgot as soon as the music started. She was about the same height as me which made it easier. It seems that the rest of the class have figured this out as the taller boys tend to dance with the taller girls and vertically challenged boys (like myself) dance with the rest. It reminded me of school photographs when you were arranged from shortest to tallest.
This weekend I shall go the latin dance party on Saturday night.
