Week 37.

This week Ian took us for Salsa, Samba, Forro and my favourite step Bolero (see Week 35). The best bit of the whole class had to be learning the turn in Bolero.

The partner starts in dancing in the side by side frame. On stepping back onto the right foot the leader opens the frame and invites the follower to start turning in a clockwise direct. We finish side by side again but facing the same direction. The leader steps forward and direct the follower to step in front - ready for the basic step. The turn is simple enough - the trick is getting the follower to step in front again. At first it made no sense but then Ian (who was not picking on anyone) told us the leaders secret. You have to turn the follower as if she were a wheelbarrow you are trying to push around a corner.

Casting my mind back to my fence building days - I was able to exactly duplicate the action. I must say the turn did feel better - although it was hard picturing my partner as wheelbarrow. She certainly was the best handling wheelbarrow I have ever had to push around - perhaps next time I am building fences...
