Photo Rescue!
Some of the orphans
This page created 8 August 1998
Photo Rescue! is a project to put orphan photos and
lost families together.
Here is one from the collection.
My favorite one - Arthur and Evan
(I'm not sure I'll give this one up if anyone claims
it)
I've cropped this photo because my ancient scanner
was giving me grief over the lack of contrast.
The message on the back reads "To aunty Flo with
love from Arthur and Evan".
The photo is on "Kodak Austral" postcard stationary,
and would date some time between 1911 and 1920.
The new Commonwealth government introduced a Cadet
training scheme (more honoured in the breech in it's infancy) for all boys
aged between 12 and 18. They were supposed to drill for several hours
a week. This was not a problem where boys were able to train with school
units in school hours, but it presented a significant hardship for those
boys in the workforce, who were generally working from dawn till dusk, and
often too tired to drill in the evening. Many regarded it at the time
as class discrimination. The Government prosecuted thousands of boys who
did not present for training, and thousands were gaoled.
