| REPORT: GUNNERS GAIN GLORY BY DOWNING JETS IN GRAND FINAL
The Ryde City Gunners Super League Under 21's covered themselves in glory on Sunday by defeating the Premiers, Fraser Park Jets, 4-2 on penalties after the two teams were locked 2-2 at the end of 100 minutes of action packed Grand Final football in the NSW Super League at Melita Stadium. In front of a crowd estimated to be in the range of 3 to 4 thousand, the Gunners looked determined right from the start, with chances coming their way midway through the first half to veteran striker Mark Williamson and captain Darren McKee; both players missing narrowly with head and foot respectively. However, it was against the run of play when the Jets scored first. From the right side, a slip-shod attempt to cover an attacker let the Jets take the lead. The second half saw the Gunners take control and as they could see the writing on the wall, threw everything at a now tiring Jets' defence. A free kick outside the centre circle was quickly taken and a diving Williamson caught the Jets napping to score a sensational goal. Shortly after, Scott Dixon slammed another free kick through a gap in the Jets wall to send the Gunners into the lead. Short lived however, as only four minutes later, another chink in the armour saw a Jets attempt converted as a shot from close range gave an almost faultless Adam Frost no chance in the Gunners goal. Both sides rallied hard in the final stages but the score locked at full time and extra time, it was a question of hit and miss as the five players from each side stepped up to determine the game. To Ryde the Glory, to the valiant Jets, the tears. Well done Gunners! A great display all year rewarded in History. Congratulations to all the boys who played in the finals on a great effort.
2001 Finals Full Squad: Goalkeepers: Adam Frost, Marcus Moscos; Defenders: Dave Provan, Tom Corte, Craig Young, Rick Ward, Luke Salkeld, Adam Israel; Midfielders: Modar Sultan, Darren McKee, Greg Fuchs, Tim Simpson, Andrew Nolan; Forwards: Mark Williamson, Bill Tsioumas | [Report by George Moscos. U19 Finals - 01/09/02 Ryde City 1 lost to Rockdale City 2 and were therefore knocked out!

NSWSL R22 - 11/08/02 - 1st Grade - AC UNITED 0 drew with RYDE CITY 0
REPORT - | "GUNNERS SINK AC TOP 5 SPOT" - AC UNITED let slip their top 5 spot when they drew 0-0 with Ryde City and other results went against them. A promising start in the 5th min when a high ball was knocked into the Ryde area, the swirling wind carrying it erratically until a AC player headed it against the left upright. 2 mins later Sestak had to parry the ball away and the return shot was cleared off the line by Jason Vella. Ryde did make some attack however such as in the 15th min when Vella took a long wind assisted shot which just sailed past the post. In the 28th min the AC keeper tried to clear a ball but succeeded in hitting it to Greg Collins but the NSW player couldn't get a shot on target. As the 1st half melded into the second there was little to record as the play moved around the midfield. AC got a header over the crossbar off a corner in the 47th min but Ryde came back with substantial pressure. A few half chances and the best chance to Ryde fell when, after a cross from the right by Greg Collins, Rob Portelli who got a shot on target, only to see the AC keeper despite being impeded by his defence, parry the ball away from pressure. With AC desperate to get the points their last chance from a dangerous cross was cleared by Cormack Begley. It was one of those draws when the goalkeepers had little to do; the busier was Ryde's Peter Sestak, twice when AC hit the upright and once when he had to parry a close in shot. The game didn't reach any great heights with wind, bounce, and the fact that neither team possessed much in-form strike power, all contributing. Some pretty ordinary refereeing didn't help. U20's lost their way and lost 3-0 to finish 3rd, and U19's lost 1-0 to finish 4th. As for Ryde's season the general consensus is that we have done well, especially the younger grades, and consolidation has been achieved in our first year back. Thanks, to all involved!
Best for Ryde: Portelli, Elverin, Collins. Squad: 20. Peter Sestak, 2. Andy Stratford, 4. Erkin Elverin, 5. Robbie Grubba, 11. Cormack Begley, 6. Greg Collins, 9. Jason Vella, 8. Damian Brown, 12. YEAR IN REVIEW - Ryde City - By Greg Stock - While they never really threatened the top five, the Gunners aim of consolidating their position in the Super League was achieved with flying colours. Assembling a Super League squad on a shoe string budget was no easy feat, but Ryde were competitive in every outing and uncovered a number of talented youngsters that could form the basis of a handy squad over the next few years.
TURNING POINT - The round 12 3-0 win against MSC Liverpool might not have meant much on paper, but it revived the Gunners fortunes, as they lost just three of their remaining games to finish ninth, eight points out of fifth spot
TOP SCORERS - Ben Burrows, Robbie Portelli and Andy Stratford 5 goals - Burrows started the season well but some off field troubles saw him move on, while Portelli and Stratford made telling contributions to the Ryde season. Another side where the absence of a quality striker cost them points.
COACH - Tony Dunn W5-D8-L9 (22) - Tried very hard with a shoestring budget in recruiting some talented youngsters to the fray, but really struggled to get his side firing until midway through the season, when it all seemed to gel. Picked up the reins in under 21s where they won the Grand Final showing the club has the talent to work with for future years
BEST PLAYERS - Andy Stratford and Greg Collins were the lifeblood and inspiration of the side, while defenders Robbie Grubba and Eddie Giraldo both put in excellent seasons. Giraldo in particular finished the season out in tremendous form and would be an excellent pickup for a Premier League club.
PLAYER FOR THE FUTURE - Tom Corte came the Gunners way midway through the year and was thrown straight into the first grade squad. He came through the test with flying colours establishing himself as a key player in the final rounds. For other clubs .... ... More ...

At Season start:

Players In: Andrew Nolan (Leichhardt Tigers), Greg Fuchs (Hakoah), Mark Williamson (Sydney Uni), Adam Israel (Manly-Warringah but injured for 10 weeks), Robbie Grubba (AC United), Erkin Everen (Bankstown City), Cormack Begley (Bray Wanderers, Ireland), Scott Dixon (from overseas trials). Late details - Ben Burrows (formerly of Fraser Park - Ben two seasons ago was one of the leading scorers in this league, Kia Lammert (a striker / attacking midfielder played Div Two in Germany), Peter Sestak (also formerly with Fraser Park - a goalkeeper from the Czech Republic).

Players Out from 2000/01: Craig Dixon (to overseas), Nathan Hall (Released), Russell Hall (Released), Andrew Prentice (Retired), Brett Murray (Released), Oliver Momircevski (White City), Con Anagnostopoulos (Released), Tim Stratford (Season - injured), Ryan Toombs (Season - injured).

Coaches Quote: "Our aim this year is to play consistent football and make the top five. We don't have the big resources of some of the other clubs, but the coaching staff have done a great job and we'll do more than just hold our own" says Tony Dunn.

Summary: Tony Dunn returned for his second season as coach, joined by hardworking Ryde City President Chris Cowley as his assistant. Promoted back to Super League from the First Division after a great 2001 season, Ryde has assembled a competitive squad and has every reason to feel confident of a 'forward' showing. Experienced campaigners such as Andrew Nolan and Greg Fuchs will lineup alongside Robbie Grubba, Erkin Everen and Adam Israel whilst up front Mark Williamson is expected to be the side's focal point in attack. Dunn is also expected to announce a few top signings in the days leading up to Round One, which will give the Gunners fans even more reason to feel confident. The experience at the back is showing the way! Also former Ryde City U18 player of the year John Fotodias from St George PL. In John's time away from the Gunners he has been overseas in Greece. Also Modar Sultan , tall hardworking midfielder from Dulwich Hill. We believe with new players joining and players returning from injury, the Gunners will start firing. Pre Season games :

  • Sunday 10th February - Ryde 3 (Foster, Stratford, Burrows) v. White City 1
  • Tuesday 19th February - Ryde 1 City v. Leichhardt Tigers 2 (PL)

20th February 2002 - Coach Tony Dunn reports:

Last night we were beaten by Premier League side Leichhardt Tigers in 1st grade by 2 goals to 1. Leichhardt opened the scoring midway through the first half through Derek Poimer. Ryde reply come through a good passing movement, and finished off by Kamal (a Fijian trialist). Tigers winners late in the second half due to a defensive error. Ryde worked hard on their passing game, and defensive tasks, and matched Leichhardt in all departments. Other than the trials listed above we will be seeking more hit outs v. Premier League sides!

12th February 2002 - Coach Tony Dunn reports:

Last weekend we played a game at short notice against White City at Cabramatta.
First grade won the game 3-1 . The 1st goal was scored by new South African midfielder Craig Foster (not the Spirit one) with a 18m strike with his left foot after 10 min. White City equalised in the second 1/3 from a corner. Andy Strafford scored with a header early in the final 1/3, with a well placed header to the bottom right post. Finally Ben Burrows (former Fraser Park striker) chipped the keeper. Other chances were missed late in the game. 10 new players are on show at the moment. The U21 won 2-1, whilst U18 loss 1-0.

5th February 2002 - Coach Tony Dunn reports:

The squad will be finalised this week. There is a weekend game against White City if weather clears. The Under 19 beat Dulwich Hill U19s by 3 goals to 1 last Sunday at Meadowbank. There is also a trial match against Fairfield Bulls on Thursday 14th Feb at Fairfield. The first team are currently putting in 4 training sessions a week, so fitness should be no problem.

2nd January 2002 - Coach Tony Dunn reported:

"There is a very pleasing signing, to be announced at a later stage. One new player is former Australian Schoolboys Rep and ex Leichhardt Tigers PL 1st Grade Greg Fuchs. Scott Dixon has returned from overseas where he had trials with Dundee and Montrose in Scotland and also Folkstone in the Dr Martens League in England. A big tall Irish defender, formerly with Bray Wanderers in the Irish Premier League will also be added to the squad, after impressing coaching staff over the last 4 trials.

We still have a squad of 30 players trialling, which recommenced on Thursday 10th January at Epping Boys High, then into Fitness Coach Ante Zizic's hands for intensive 4-6 weeks pre-season training, including beach and road work. This will be mixed with technical training and pre-season games, finishing off in early March with a weekend camp for all three grades. The under 21's are looking very strong, and the under 19's finished off the year with draw and win in a competition at Rockdale in late Dec."

Coaching Staff 2002 - (please use sensible discretion when phoning):

  • First grade - Tony Dunn (head coach/football manager) (Ph: 02 92042742), Assistant coaches - Chris Cowley ; and Assist/coach & fitness coach - Ante Zizic (former Sydney United, Wolves, Fairfield Bulls, and Fraser Park player)

HISTORY

For the story of the Ryde City club

Much Earlier - local top football:

Photos from Robert Smith - Thanks!

I am just old enough to remember the mighty Gladesville Ryde United Soccer Football club, which played in the NSW 1st Division (the top local level well before the NSL came about), merged with Auburn by the early sixties to form Cumberland United and then dissappeared altogether. The club played at Gladesville Sportsground in Swan Street, Gladesville. This is now a group of houses in Rundle Place (off Swan St) behind the Gladesville Bowling & Sports Club on Ryde Road. They moved there from Peel's Paddock. The Club House was on Victoria Rd, where the McDonalds now stands, and there was a match notice board on a shop front opposite the Presbyterian Church in Victoria Rd! (My memories and also thanks to Robert Smith for earlier info!)

I have memories of crowds of 2000 or so there to see teams like Prague and Sydney Austral and players like Baumgartner, Jaros, Tamandl play, and Lord and Marston (in their twilight years). The local hero was keeper Ken Hough whose giant kicks enthrawled us kids! My first football memory is a Gladesville-Ryde away bus trip to Corrimal with my dad. Some of you may remember the days of Leichdardt-Annandale, Wallsend, and Metters.

I'd love to hear from anyone with pictures in the history of the Gunners, and of course any information on Gladesville-Ryde United FC. Photos can be scanned and returned. Digital photos can be loaded to this site directly through the Photo Gallery!

For old-timers like me or those interested in Australian football history go to: The Australian Football On-line Museum
