| REPORT: GUNNERS GAIN GLORY BY DOWNING JETS IN GRAND FINAL
The Ryde City Gunners Super League Under 21's covered themselves in glory on Sunday by defeating the Premiers, Fraser Park Jets, 4-2 on penalties after the two teams were locked 2-2 at the end of 100 minutes of action packed Grand Final football in the NSW Super League at Melita Stadium. In front of a crowd estimated to be in the range of 3 to 4 thousand, the Gunners looked determined right from the start, with chances coming their way midway through the first half to veteran striker Mark Williamson and captain Darren McKee; both players missing narrowly with head and foot respectively. However, it was against the run of play when the Jets scored first. From the right side, a slip-shod attempt to cover an attacker let the Jets take the lead. The second half saw the Gunners take control and as they could see the writing on the wall, threw everything at a now tiring Jets' defence. A free kick outside the centre circle was quickly taken and a diving Williamson caught the Jets napping to score a sensational goal. Shortly after, Scott Dixon slammed another free kick through a gap in the Jets wall to send the Gunners into the lead. Short lived however, as only four minutes later, another chink in the armour saw a Jets attempt converted as a shot from close range gave an almost faultless Adam Frost no chance in the Gunners goal. Both sides rallied hard in the final stages but the score locked at full time and extra time, it was a question of hit and miss as the five players from each side stepped up to determine the game. To Ryde the Glory, to the valiant Jets, the tears. Well done Gunners! A great display all year rewarded in History. Congratulations to all the boys who played in the finals on a great effort.

GUNNERS 21'S THROUGH TO GRAND FINAL NEXT SUNDAY AT MELITA STADIUM
In a "winner take all" tussle last Sunday at Hajduk Stadium, the Ryde City Gunners Under 21's defeated arch nemesis AC United to advance to the Grand Final of the NSWSF Super League by 2 goals to 1. Nervously trying to put behind their last week's loss to Fraser Park, the Gunners started determinedly and controlled most of the first half. With a strong wind advantage, which one might add they failed to capitalise upon, the Gunners found themselves scoreless, although they had the best of the scoring chances, before the half time whistle. When imposing defender Dave Provan required replacement ten minutes into the second half, the Gunners lost cohesion and a slipshod tackle allowed the AC team to capitalise. With nothing to lose, the Gunners brought on striker Bill Tsioumas who quickly stamped his presence, ghosting in on the right and latching onto a Mark Williamson ball and, from a narrow angle put in the perfect shot, giving the AC goalie no chance. This goal inspired the entire team and led to exciting raids against a now tiring AC United defence. The score remained at 1-1 until the second period of extra time when a cross from the right found a flying Scott Dixon who, although marked , managed to slip his defender and with a shot high into the net, send the Gunners players and supporters into delirium! Melita Stadium next Sunday at 12.15 in front of a huge crowd and ninety minutes to play - what price glory? Be there and create Gunner history!

Ryde City 2 (Tousimas 84th Dixon 97th) v AC United 1 at Hajduk Stadium, Edensor Park, on Sunday 1 September 2002. Preliminary Final. It was an uncharacteristic nervous performance by the Ryde City Gunners, the game was evenly matched until AC United scored just after halftime. The Gunners then worked their way dominating possession, and scoring an equaliser taking the game into extra time, and then winning the game with a golden goal to send them into the Grand Final next Sunday. The opening 20 minutes of the game produced a nervous start by both teams with hustle and bustle the name of the game. In the 5th minute Tim Simpson slipped a through ball to Mark Williamson running outside the 18-yard box finning the move with a shot low to the near post, saved by the AC United keeper. In the 20th minute Mudar Sultan found time and space, driving his shot 30 yards out from the goal forcing the AC United keeper with an excellent save palming the powerful shot over the cross bar. In the 36th minute Greg Fuchs sent Luke Salkeld on his way down the right flank, Luke worked his way past his defender taking the ball to the by-line crossing low to Mark Williamson forcing another saved from the AC United keeper. In the 42nd minute Scott Dixon forced the busy AC United keeper with another saved shooting from just outside the 18-yard box. The half ended with both teams sharing the possession of the ball, the Gunners ahead both on corners (four to one) and eight shots on goal (eight to four). AC United rarely threatened the Ryde City defence resorting to long shots on goals. The half ended with no goals to either side. A throw-in from AC United caught the Gunners napping when AC United striker running freely from midfield into the 18-yard box to slot his shot past the stranded Gunners keeper Adam Frost in the 56th minute. With whole game concentrating within the mass of players in the centre of midfield neither side settled to take control of the game. The Gunners made three substitutions to open the game, AC United responded with three quick substitutions soon after. The game did begin to open with the Gunners the more likely and imposing side of the two, however, some of the basics in football continued to elude some players. Ironically, the fundamental basics of the game came together in the 84th minute for the Gunners, when a throw-in by Greg Fuchs from left midfield was headed down by Darren McKee to stopper Craig Young, switching play from left to right, Craig played the ball to Mudar Sultan waiting just outside the 18-yard box, and Mudar back-heal the ball through three defenders to Bill Tousimas who was lurking outside the right hand side of the 18-yard box to shoot low and hard into the left hand side of the goal. The game moved into extra time with five minutes a half allocated. The first half of extra time wasn't without incident with a clash of heads forcing an AC United defender to seek medical treatment. Within two minutes of the second half of extra time Scott Dixon with a turning shot just inside the 18-yard box scored the golden goal, for the Gunners to win by two to one. Squad: 23.Adam Frost. 2.Dave Provan. 3 Luke Salkeld. 4. Adam Israel. 5. Darren McKee. 6.Greg Fuchs. 8.Tim Simpson. 9.Mark Williamson. 11.Craig Young. 13.Mudar Sultan. 14.Scott Dixon. Ryde went to a 2-0 lead by halftime after playing some controlled and entertaining football, however they dropped off in the second half under sustained Hawks attack. Despite letting one in they held them off to live to play next week. Details of that game will be published on this site when known.
After scoring an early goal Ryde showed their control of the game by going further ahead before halftime. There was only one real scare when Hajduk hit the crossbar, and other than a few wobbles Ryde looked good for further progress. Both goals by an on fire Darren McKee came from corners.
| REPORT | AC UNITED 0 drew with RYDE CITY 0
REPORT - | "GUNNERS SINK AC TOP 5 SPOT" - AC UNITED let slip their top 5 spot when they drew 0-0 with Ryde City and other results went against them. A promising start in the 5th min when a high ball was knocked into the Ryde area, the swirling wind carrying it erratically until a AC player headed it against the left upright. 2 mins later Sestak had to parry the ball away and the return shot was cleared off the line by Jason Vella. Ryde did make some attack however such as in the 15th min when Vella took a long wind assisted shot which just sailed past the post. In the 28th min the AC keeper tried to clear a ball but succeeded in hitting it to Greg Collins but the NSW player couldn't get a shot on target. AS the 1st half melded into the second there was little to record as the play moved around the midfield. AC got a header over the crossbar off a corner in the 47th min but Ryde came back with substantial pressure. A few half chances and the best chance to Ryde fell when, after a cross from the right by Greg Collins, Rob Portelli who got a shot on target, only to see the AC keeper despite being impeded by his defence, parry the ball away from pressure. With AC desperate to get the points their last chance from a dangerous cross was cleared by Cormack Begley. It was one of those draws when the goalkeers had little to do, the busier Ryde's Peter Sestak, when twice AC hit the upright and once when he had to parry a close in shot. The game didn't reach any great heights with wind, bounce, and the fact that neither team possessed much in-form strike power all contributing. Some pretty ordinary refereeing didn't help. U20's lost their way and lost 3-0 to finish 3rd, and U19's lost 1-0 to finish 4th. As for Ryde's season the general consensus is that we have done well, especially the younger grades, and consolidation has been achieved in our first year back.

Ryde City U21's gunned down by AC United
U21 Ryde City 0 v AC United 3 at Abruzzi Park Fairfield, Sunday 11 August, 2002 - There is really not much to write about today as the events that unfolded today was a shattering experience for Ryde City's young guns. The game today was set-up for a great match with Ryde City leading the competition with two points, needing a result to ensure a Minor Premiership placing with AC United needing a result to stay in the top five. Heavyweights Ryde City put in a flat performance against AC United, losing by three goals to nil and handing the Minor Premiership to Frazer Park, a team which Ryde City have beaten twice this year (3-0 away and 5-2 at home). In today's game it was obvious with the luck AC United were having, they scored three goals that would otherwise not have been awarded in another game against Ryde City. AC United first goal, uncharacteristically caught the Ryde City defence out with a counter attack through the midfield and with their numbers they spread the Ryde City defence apart to allow room for one their midfielders to score outside the 18-yard box in the 34th minute. Ten minutes later, AC United scored with a curling and dipping shot just outside the 18-yard box, that Ryde City defence never expected. The half ended with 0-2 to AC United. After 10 minutes into the second half Ryde City tried to produce a more controlled and structured style of football but failed to provide the final passes to both of their strikers. With luck totally deserting, their efforts proved fruitless on the scoreboard, to rub further insult AC United were awarded a penalty to extend their lead to 0-3 in the 70th. (Report by Simon Turner)

| REPORT | RYDE CITY 0 lost to ROCKDALE CITY SUNS 2 (Spase Najdoski 30', Denis Alilovic 73’)
REPORT - | "SUNS SET AT MAGDALA" - League Premiers Rockdale City Suns set themselves as worthy of the mantle with the added distinction of having beaten all teams when they downed competitive Ryde City Gunners at Magdala Park. Despite Ryde making perhaps 3 times as many chances as Rockdale the striking pedigree showed when two of their three shots on target well beat Ryde keeper Peter Sestak. At the other end Suns keeper Peter Trajcevski was much busier but few shots were really on target. Ryde started well with a strong wind at their backs when Jason Vella curled a floater toward goal but Trajcevski took it above his head well, and then Scott Dixon hit a speculator which went well wide as did one on the turn a minute later. Rockdale had the better of midfield play with Ryde turning over possession too much, however the Ryde defence, weakened by the suspension of genial Irishman Cormack Begley, were holding the star studded Suns attack. In fact the Suns were increasingly relying on counter attack so it was fitting that in the 30th min Spase Najdoski scored from a Rockdale breakaway, slotting the ball firmly past Sestak from the left, from some 25m out. A minute later Scott Dixon had the ball in the Suns net but Rob Portelli was judged offside. In the 33rd min Tom Corti, growing in confidence, got himself into the area with a well timed run in from the left and receiving under pressure alas hit the ball wide on the right. The midfield battle continued until half-time. After the break Dixon missed a great chance to level the score at 49 mins when he knocked a header onto the crossbar with Trajcevski beaten. In the 54th min Sestak touched a hard shot from the left past his right upright, however Ryde lifted their tempo and pounded on Rockdale City's gates. They held, unfortunately, with the best chance coming from a ball switched from right to left by Greg Collins but the receiver Scott Dixon rushed his shot, and it went wide. At the other end Najdoski totally hashed a shot when the Suns were two on one - Robbie Grubba using all his experience. Again against the 'grain' of the game and with Ryde wasting oppportunities, Denis Alilovic from a counterattack hit a firm 25m strike just inside the Sestak's left upright giving the custodian no chance, in the 73rd min. Tom Corti had two chances but could only drag up a weak header and a shot straight at the keeper. With the minutes ticking by Alilovic hit a strike which took a wicked deflection, and Sestak made a brilliant one handed parry over his cross bar. In injury time both Dixon and Brown had weak shots and Ryde rued the lost opportunities to make the scoreline match the play.
Best for Ryde: Portelli, Dixon, Grubba, Stratford, Elverin, Ward
Squad: 20. Peter Sestak, 2. Andy Stratford, 4. Erkin Elverin, 5. Robbie Grubba, 6. Greg Collins, 7. Scott Dixon, 9. Jason Vella (8. Damian Brown 77'), 12. Rob Portelli , 11. Cormack Begley, 17. U21s Edge Closer To The Premiership - Ryde City 3 (Williamson 21st, Sultan 23rd, Tousimas 88th) v Rockdale 1 (73rd) The respective positions in the Super League competition ladder did not reflect the performance of both teams today. Rockdale prove a competitive unit across the park but could not contain the edge that competition leaders Ryde City held all over the park. Ryde City attacked Rockdale right from the first whistle with Mark Williamson caught offside in the 5th and 12th minutes of the game. In the 21st minute Andrew Nolan dribbled down the left flank beating his defender to take the ball to the edge of the 18-yard box to cross to a flying Williamson diving to head the ball into the net. It was one of the goals of the season. Soon after the play turned to the right hand side of the field when Tousimas from midfield threaded a ball between two Rockdale defenders picking a supercharged Mudar Sultan beating two defenders and then the keeper with a low drive into the net in the 23rd minute. Ryde City continued to better Rockdale in retaining possession and structure of their play. Darren McKee made a great run from the midfield dribbling from the halfway line into the 18-yard box but poor finishing let him down in the 33rd minute. Nolan typified the work down the left flank with a run into the 18-yard box but his cross from the by-line was cut out by the Rockdale keeper in the 38th minute. The half ended with Ryde City up by two goals to nil. Rockdale started the better of the two teams pushing their team forward playing three strikers up front. Whilst retaining most of the possession they failed to penetrate the Ryde City defence. With possession starting to even out, Tim Simpson making a great run down the left flank cut the ball to Tousimas. Tousimas turned with the ball to face his defender and dribbled around his defender on the outside, taking the ball into the 18-yard box stretching the Rockdale defence wide, crossed to Williamson on the far post but the finish went wide of the goals in the 63rd minute. In the 67th minute a pass from midfield found Tousimas racing ahead of the Rockdale defence towards the 18-yard box, his shirt pulled back twice in the process of shooting for goal in the 18-yard box, his third attempt to shoot missed the target. In the 73rd an error in the Ryde City defence losing possession of the ball allowed Rockdale to shoot on goal, Marcus Moscos palmed the shot to his right but Rockdale scored from the rebound. With the score now at 2-1 to Ryde City, both teams searched for an extra goal. Ryde City had the better of the scoring opportunities but failed to capitalised on their possession of the football. Finally substitute striker Cameron Jones provided Nolan with a through ball between two defenders, and with his second touch into the 18-yard box Nolan drew out the Rockdale keeper and passed the ball into the penalty spot to Tousimas, who made no mistake finding the net in the 88th minute.Ryde City won by 3-1. The race for the Premiership is tight with Ryde City two points ahead of three teams sharing equal points. It is a simple equation that a win is a must for the Ryde City boys as the winner of the Premiership will be decided in the last game next week. Starting Line up: 1. Marcus Moscos. 2. Dave Provan. 3. Luke Salkeld. 4. Adam Israel. 5. Darren McKee. 6. Greg Fuchs. 8. Tim Simpson. 9. Mark Williamson. 10. Bill Tousimas 13. Mudar Sultan. 19. Andrew Nolan. Subs: 7. Rick Ward 11. Craig Young. 12. | REPORT | SYDNEY UNIVERSITY 2 (Michael Thwaite 20’ Luke McDougall 85’) lost to RYDE CITY 3 (Robbie Portelli 29’, Scott Dixon 38’, 67’)
REPORT - | "RYDE CLEAN SWEEP OF 'THE STUDENTS' " - Ryde dominated this match without being able to make the scoreline reflect it, but despite again falling to the often noted mental 'walkabout' at around 80 mins, they deserved the win which takes them a little more away from the 'spoon-zone', especially with relegation rules unclear. 30 seconds into the game Scott Dixon attempted a snap over the shoulder shot which was touched over. The always energetic Andy Stratford got forward in the 6th min and put in a cross which passed behind Dixon, and 3 mins later had a cross cut out in the box for a corner and then Stratford headed wide in the 15th min. At last Uni got into gear and in the 16th min Uni's Paul Croci got a snap shot in on the left, which Peter Sestak managed to parry away well with one hand. Ryde was still in full flight however and midfielder Jason had the ball in the net in the 18th, however Robbie Portelli was judged offside. Well against the run of play Uni got a goal through Anthony Cheong sneaking it in at the left post, and 4 mins later Uni sent another one past the post. In the 27th min Ryde got back on level terms through Rob Portelli turned a Greg Collins cross from close in into the net, and moved to 2-1 when an own goal went in as a result of pressure by Collins run on the left. Ryde finished the half strongly. The second half saw Ryde dominating for long periods, even when Uni brought previously injured Freddy Umlil on. In the 60th min Vella shot just over the bar from 20m and then Collins made a fine run free into Uni's half supported by 2 other players and they should have made something of it. In 68th min Tom Corti got forward and slung a short low cross to Scott Dixon who smashed it past Uni keeper Matt Craw. Warning signs came in the 70th min when a Uni player waltzed through a static Ryde defence however he shot well over the crossbar. Ryde continued to attack but lacked penetration and Uni scored again in the 86th min to send chills through the Ryde spectators. In fact Uni had the ball in the net in the 88th min only to have it ruled offside. Ryde must learn to put sides they dominate down, a hard ask next week of course at home against League winners Rockdale City Suns. Best for Ryde: Collins, Portelli, Dixon, Grubba, Stratford, Elverin.

Ryde City U/21's too good for Sydney University - U/21 Ryde City 3 (McKee 14th, T Tousimas 56th, Simpson 70th) v Sydney University 0 at Sydney University Oval, Sunday 28th July, 2002. It was a relaxing sunny day at Sydney University for the spectators sitting on the surrounding hills with leafy trees, overlooking a picket-fenced oval. The pitch used for cricket in the summer provided a hard slippery surface. The players adjusted to the conditions that resembled their own training ground. With three competitions games remaining Ryde City were never going to relinquish their two points competition lead with a convincing three goals to nil win. The depth of this team was best served by the quality of players sitting on the bench. In the 6th and 7th minute two successive corners were conceded by Sydney University, summing up the pressure Ryde City were applying to the opponents with twin strikers Billy Tousimas and Mark Williamson stretching the Sydney University defence wide. In the 9th minute good midfield work between Nolan, Simpson and McKee found Tousimas finishing the move with a low shot on goal just wide of the left hand side upright. In the 13th minute Tousimas close down both Sydney defender then keeper to force the keeper to lose possession and commit a foul in the process inside the 18-yard box. Captain Darren McKee stepped up to score Ryde City first of the match from the penalty spot. In the 15th minute Dave Provan intercepted a Sydney University throw-in with a header to Tousimas in midfield playing out to Nolan on the left making a run down the wing, Williamson made a run for the near post dragging two defenders, Nolan crossed the ball which was too deep for Tim Simpson making a great run from midfield. Ryde City continued to dominate retaining possession of the ball in their opponents half. In the 38th minute Mark Williamson using his upper body strength turned his defender inside the 18-yard box and shot straight at the Sydney University keeper and instantly reacted to the keeper's save returning a shot over the bar. In the 40th minute the referee blew for half-time due to a late start. In the 49th minute Sydney University retained good possession of the ball through defence and midfield then finished the move with a shot over the cross bar, their first serious threat of the game. In the 54th minute Nolan dribbled down the left wing sending a cross to both Williamson and Tousimas with Tousimas heading wide. In the 56th minute Sydney University committed a foul throw-in, a quick throw-in by Ryde City to Rick Ward who controlled the ball and sent a low cross to the 18-yard box, the ball failed to be picked up by Sydney University defenders and Tousimas made no mistake find the net with his second touch. In the 61st minute Simpson dribbled down the left wing and slotted a ball behind the Sydney University defence to Tousimas, then taking the ball into the 18-yard box and cut the ball back towards Simpson but his shot swerved narrowly away from the goals. In the 67th minute substitute Cameron Jones turned a Sydney University defender inside the 18-ayrd box and drew the keeper out wide then cut the ball back to Simpson with an open goal missed. In the 70th minute Ryde City defenders after retaining possession of the ball with sweeping moves across the back-line, released a through ball to Jones in the midfield, passing the ball to Simpson on the left wing, Simpson took the ball into the 18-yard box and his low drive found the right hand side of the goals to take Ryde City three nil up. In the 72nd minute a deep cross into the 18-yard box by Mudar Sultan was chested down by Williamson finding Jones in the six-yard box shooting over the cross-bar. In the 78th minute Ryde City defender Luke Salfield was adjudged to have fouled Sydney University midflielder, Tyronne Lara, in the 18-yard box. Daniel Conway just coming off the bench to replace Adam Frost, made a finger tipped saved to send the penalty kick into the goal post and clear of play. In the 81st minute Jones committed two ball winning tackles in the midfield and then shot a low drive, narrowly missing the goals. In the 89th minute a through ball from defence to Ricky Ward with only the keeper to beat, Ward was brought down outside the 18-yard box by a Sydney University defender. Ward took the free-kick sending the ball over the crossbar. Overall it was a good squad performance that resulted in a win that was expected over Sydney University. There are two games remaining, a win next week will confirm our place in the top five, however, the fight for first place is likely to be decided in the last game. Squad:- 23. Frost. 2. | REPORT | RYDE CITY 2 (Greg Collins 66', Damian Brown 81') defeated DULWICH HILL 0
REPORT - | "RYDE CLIMB THE HILL AND COME OUT ON TOP" - In a fairly average game played in nice sunshine but a biting wind, and despite Rob Portelli missing three chances and a few more gone begging to others, Ryde ran out winners 2-0 in a game that they almost dominated for long periods without putting Dulwich Hill to the sword. In the 10th min a Ryde speculator tested the strong wind and the Dulwich Hill keeper had to touch it over. 4 mins later Rob Portelli blasted a shot over from 7m after a good move up the left side by Andy Stratford. Dulwich Hill pushed up and Ryde keeper Peter Sestak did his 'Chilavert impression' to tackle the DH player somewhere near the corner post, and had to scramble back when it stayed in play. 3 min later DH had a snap shot which was taken easily by Sestak. In the 20th min a nice move by Tom Corti to Rob Portelli to Andy Stratford, ended with the big midfielder hitting it well wide. In the 28th min Rob Portelli was again the culprit after getting into a good position when he lobbed the keeper and the bar. The Gunners contined the pressure on the Dulwich Hill defence but it held and there was no further way through, until just before the half-time whistle when Erkin Elverin got up on the right and his swirling cross was connected in the air by Greg Collins whose snap shot went over. After the break it was again all Ryde with first Jason Vella shooting wide and Portelli off Vella missing by cm (also offside), and then Portelli shotting straight at the keeper on the turn in the 61st min. A minute later Portelli got a foot to flick on a Cormack Begley shot but the keeper did well. Awarded a freekick in the 66th min Ryde gave it to Collins whose curling 35m ball carried with the wind to the top corner of the net. Dulwich answered with an attack that led to a shot which cannoned off Begley's face for a corner. In the 79th min Dulwich Hill got a header on target over an advancing Sestak but Elverin was on hand to clear the danger. At the other end 3 mins later Vella and Scott Dixon put together some good lead-up work which was capitalised on by Damian Brown who flicked the ball past the keeper. Dulwich Hill attempted to come back and they had two opportunites, one in the 86th min when they were just wide after 2 blocked attempts, and in the 89th when a snap shot was on target but taken well. A well deserved win but a few more are needed as most of the bottom teams lift their game late in the season.
Best for Ryde: Erkin Elverin, Scott Dixon, Andy Stratford, with Rob Portelli at least getting the chances he didn't put away. Squad: 20. Peter Sestak, 2. Andy Stratford, 4. Erkin Elverin, 5. U/21's back to Winning Ways - U21 Ryde City 4 (Fuchs 31st, Ward 36th, Williamson 62nd, 80th Jones) v Dulwich Hill 1 (58th). After last week's debacle the U/21's came out with a different attitude against Dulwich Hill with a well deserved win. It was welcome return for Ryde City defender, Dave Provan, returning to the fray after two-weeks on the sidelined through an injury. Ryde City underestimated the strength of the wind blowing behind their backs as pass after pass seemed to be overplayed. In the 10 minute Billy Tousimas pulled away from his marker at the centre of halfway line, turned and threaded a ball to his strike partner Mark Williamson, only to be pulled up for offside. In the 20th minute a long ball out from the Dulwich Hill defence was well controlled by Adam Israel with his chest, then immediately sending a diagonal ball over the defence to Ryde City striker Mark Williamson, again another offside decision was given. In the 25th minute Luke Salkeld, dribbled down the left flank, starting from the halfway line and continuing down towards the 18-yard box, cut the ball inside to midfielder Ricky Ward finishing the play with a shot hitting the upright of the goals for a goal kick. In the 30th minute a well judged bounce of a ball by Greg Fuchs, chested the ball pass his defender and skipped towards the Dulwich Hill goal to force the keeper off his line, Fuchs finished his run with a delicate chip over the Dulwich Hill keeper to score Ryde City's first of the match. In the 36th minute Billy Tsioumas worked hard without the ball to close down a Dulwich Hill defender at the halfway line, to turn over possession with a return pass between Tsioumas and Mark Williamson, dribbling the ball into the 18-yard box and unselfishly returned the ball into the path of Ricky Ward to fire home the home team's second goal of the match. The half ended with Ryde City up with two goals to nil. In the 51st minute Tsioumas received the ball at the halfway line and slipped a through ball pass the defence to Williamson dribbling his way into the 18-yard box with only the keeper to beat, his shot was well saved by the keeper palming away for a corner. With the tide turning, Dulwich Hill turned their game into attacking play, two successive corners were conceded by Ryde City. Taking advantage of the rare in-roads into Ryde City territory, Dulwich Hill directed a cross from the right wing, finding a Dulwich Hill midfielder running deep into the 18-yard box and climbing to meet a header into the Ryde City goal, catching the Ryde City defence square in the 60th minute. In the 62nd minute Tsioumas turned his defender 30 yards from the Dulwich Hill goal and slipped a through ball pass the defence to Williamson dribbling his way into the 18-yard box, with only the keeper to beat, Williamson made no mistake with a low hard drive into the right hand side of the goal. After making inroads in the right midfield Fuchs slotted a ball out to Tsioumas on the wing, sliding pass two defenders Tsioumas finished with a low drive across the face of the goal narrowly missing the upright. A rare attack by Dulwich Hill was well smothered by Ryde City keeper Marcus Moscos, ending the one-on-one situation to force a corner. Ryde City immediately responded with Fuchs drawing the Dulwich Hill defence wide on the right, drawing the keeper of his line and cutting into the path of substitute striker Cameron Jones to score Ryde City's fourth goal in the 81st minute. The game ended with Ryde City winners by 4-1 to one. The win now has Ryde City regaining the lead by two points with three games remaining. The spirit is alive in the team but is the concentration there to put two hands on the premiership? Only time will tell, it's not over until the final whistle, because it can easily slip away. | REPORT | HURSTVILLE CS 2 (H Sevgin 70', J Aschner 85') defeated RYDE CITY 0
REPORT - | "RYDE GIVE WAY TO CRESCENT STAR" - In the once grand but now very seedy St George Stadium Ryde can only blame themselves for not putting at least two past Hurstville's keeper, and for over relying on the offside trap - and thus left themselves open to their fast counter attacking play. Certainly Ryde had enough of the play to say they were on top until Hurstville struck through a 74th min goal from a shot which evaded the defence and slipped inside the right hand upright of Peter Sestak's goal. They were finished off in the 88th min by a goal which came after the Ryde defence stopped and claimed offside, and when the referee played on they seemed to be unable to get back onto their men, with a Hustville player able to shoot from 20m past Sestak. Although Ryde came out well with Mark Williamson (back from sickness) volleying at the goal and the keeper just palming it wide Hustville gave warning 2 mins later when they drifted off their men and the free shot from close range was deflected while goal bound. In the 24th min Hurstville had the ball in the net but it was disallowed for offside. Ryde finished the half strongly with sustained pressure but no goal. The 2nd half started as a scrappy affair. Williamson headed over in the 54th min from 10m after a cross from Collins. In the 62nd min usually reliable Andy Stratford missed right in front. Despite HCS lobbing Sestak, and the crossbar, in the 68th min Ryde were looking more likely with a Collins speculator in the 70th min. After the HCS goal the tide turned and Ryde were on the back foot and never looked like winners despite a Collins shot over in the 87th and an Andrew Nolan snap shot in extra time. Best for Ryde: Grubba, Elverin, Collins, Portelli, Williamson. Referee: Boyd McGregor; Crowd: 300; Ryde squad: Sestak, Stratford, Elverin, Corti, Grubba, Giraldo, Vella (Sultan 85'), Williamson (Nolan 70'), Begley, Collins, Portelli. |
A flat performance by Ryde City U21's - Ryde City 1 (Damien Brown) v Hurstville City CS 3 at St George Stadium on Sunday 14 July 2002. A sunny Sunday was the only highlight at a neglected St George stadium, with a flat and poor Ryde City team performance. The game started off well for Ryde City with John Fotiadis nearly scoring from a free kick outside the 18-yard box forcing the Hurstville keeper to palm his shot over the bar. The game failed to be controlled by either side with a lack of ball control and mobility around the park. In the 21st minute an incorrect decision led to a Hurstville throw-in from the left hand side of the park, a false sense of security in the Ryde City midfield and defence failed to pick up two quick passes that led to a lob over a stranded Ryde City keeper into the net. This goal failed to rejuvenate a flat Ryde City team who then conceded another goal in the 33rd minute after failing to pick up a through ball from the centre of midfield over the defence in which the Hurstville striker latched onto and the put away to the left hand side of the goal. The best passage of play came in the 40th minute, from a swift move from Ryde City defence to attack, with a interchange of four passes down the right hand side and across the 18-yard box saw Ryde City striker Damien Brown complete the move with a strike on goal, and celebrated the goal with a great summersault. The second half did not produce any highlights with a lack of cohesion all over the park. The Ryde City team tried to equalise without any success and were caught on the break in the 85th minute to put to an end, in what was, a miserable game. To put it simply, Hurstville took three shots on goal and won the game. Ryde City defender Craig Young put in another strong performance. The team remains in second place, one point behind the leaders AC United. (Report by Simon Turner).

REPORT - | "RYDE GAIN AN AWAY POINT BUT LOSE A PLACE" - Ryde City travelled to Cromer Park to meet the 2nd placed Robbie Slater coached Dolphins. They came away with a point for a well earned draw but other results meant they dropped a further place to 10th. It was a game that didn't reach great heights, but there was some drama as Warringah missed a dubious penalty and both sides hit the upright. Scott Dixon made I think his first start for the season and was in the action early on when after a slow start to the match Scott was found free in the middle but his shot was weak and straight at Tim West in the Dolphins goal. A few monents later Manly had their first chance when a Phil Moss free kick from 35m found Hamilton Thorpe free in the box but he headed straight to Peter Sestak. In the 18th min Jason Vella took a snap shot from the left which hit the upright after a cross from Greg Collins who received a great through ball from Erkin Elverin. In the 23rd min Dixon shot from the edge of the area and the keeper just tipped it past the far post. After a point blank shot at Sestak in the 35th min Manly got their chance with a dubious penalty given against Robbie Grubba. Hamilton Thorp stepped up and hit it just to the left of Sestak who had picked it - a fair outcome. Although Ryde had the better chances early in the half they were put under sustained pressure as it ended. The second half saw the Dolphins getting into the danger zone repeatedly, and if Steve Berry had been in better touch things would have been grim. As it a header off the right upright was all they got until Damien Rosenthal took advantage a loose marking Ryde defence to slot it home from 15m in the 61st min. Ryde struck back almost immediately through a Rob Portelli free kick on the left which reached the head of a rampaging Andy Stratford who headed firmly into the top of the net. 5 mins alter Portelli shot over after being put through by Stratford. At the other end Thorp lobbed Sestak but cleared the crossbar as well. In the 78th min Ryde strung together a sublime 6 pass movement which led to Vella passing to Stratford who was clear into the box and stretching he hit an outside of the foot strike which just missed the far post. Andrew Clark at the other end shot on target in the 80th min but a Ryde player intercepted and headed clear. Best for Ryde: Portelli, Stratford, Grubba, Sestak.
Ryde squad: Peter Sestak, Andy Stratford, Erkin Elveren, Robbie Grubba, Greg Collins, Scott Dixon, Cormack Begley, Rob Portelli, Jason Vella, Eddie Giraldo, Tom Corte. |
'Ryde City U21's back to winning ways!' - Ryde City 1 (Greg Fuchs 89th) v Warringah Dolphins 0 at Cromer Park Sunday 7 July 2002. It was a warm sunny day up at Cromer Park with a slight breeze running up the field. A late winner by substitute Greg Fuchs paid dividends for a committed Ryde City team performance. Ryde City started the better of the two teams varying their attacks on the Dolphins defence on both flanks and down the middle. In the 24th minute Billy Tsioumas dribbled the ball into the 18-yard box and was heavily tackled without the ball by a Dolphins defender, but the blind referee waved play on. Soon after the Dolphins exploited the Ryde City defence with a quick counter attack with only Ryde City keeper Adam Frost to beat with a shot that went well clear of the goal. The gaps in the middle of the field began to open up in the second half with Ryde City controlling most of the possession but lacking the final touch on goal. In the 67th minute Mark Williamson turned his defender inside the 18-yard box and rocketed a shot past the stranded Dolphins keeper only to hit the underside of the bar and upright and the ball bounce back into the field of play. In the 80th a cross from the right wing found Bill Tsioumas rising above the Dolphins defence to head the ball against the cross bar. With both teams trying to break the deadlock, in the 84th minute the Dolphins broke through the Ryde City defence with keeper Adam Frost saving three respective shots on goal to force a corner. In the 89th minute a through ball into the right hand side of the 18-yard box found Bill Tsioumas turning with a low cross cutting back into the near post with an alert Greg Fuchs firing home the winner. Overall it was a good performance by the team, a well-deserved win. A win that keeps the team in second place one point behind the leaders AC United. (Report by Simon Turner).

| REPORT | RYDE CITY 0 lost to HAJDUK WANDERERS 2 (M Van Cuylenberg 15', P Farac 68')
REPORT - | "Greg Stock reporting.... Hajduk Wanderers moved a step closer to a coveted semi-final spot posting a hard-fought 2-0 win over Ryde City on Sunday afternoon. With the Gunners dominating everywhere but the scoreboard it was an unlikely win from Hajduk who still show signs of being the ‘Jeckyll and Hyde’ side of this season’s competition. While the Wanderers did start the game at a million miles an hour, they were left to rue a couple of golden chances in front of goal as the speedy Peter Farac and partner Daniel Kukucka created space in behind the Ryde lines. Mauro Van Cuylenburg seizing the opportunity to push forward in the 15th minute and successfully try his luck from 25 yards. Ryde goalkeeper Peter Sestak was caught well out of position, and unable to get his hands to well judged lob shot. But just as quickly as they started, the Wanderers seemed to drift off, allowing Ryde the opportunity to master possession and field position for the remainder of the half. Damien Brown was left kicking himself as he missed everything from point blank range with a strike in the 38th minute, as he blazed away after a good move started by Greg Collins from deep inside their own half. Again after the half-time break, it was the same story. Hajduk dominating for the first twenty minutes before strangely checking out of the game mentally and turning the flow of the game over to the Gunners. Peter Farac scoring his third goal in the past two weeks when he made the most of some indecision between goalkeeper Sestak and one of his defenders in the 68th minute, but apart from that moment of joy, the chances were few and far between. Farac and substitute Tim Gledhill were lively but lacked support and without the experience of the injured Gabriel Gonzalez, they were left to battle it out up front alone. Ryde City did have some opportunities to pull the game out of the fire but their forward line lacked the punch of previous weeks and appeared too one dimensional. Instead of using the full width of the pitch they preferred to pump long balls at makeshift striker Andy Stratford and with his marker Mark Reveley doing an excellent job in the air, his influence on the match was negligible. Eddie Giraldo, Cormack Begley and Robbie Grubba are an outstanding back three but with Sestak badly caught out twice they were left carrying the bag on a losing side. But for the winners, coach Tommy McCulloch will need to address the mental inadequacies of a side that has the ability to be a genuine top three contender if they can be more consistent. But for the winners, coach Tommy McCulloch will need to address the mental inadequacies of a side that has the ability to be a genuine top three contender if they can be more consistent. The likes of .JJ Ellul and Trent Worrall are really coming of age as players and with the experience and class of Mauro van Cuylenburg and Mark Reveley they could be a dark horse for the finals. Scouts out there should pencil in the black book the name of Peter Farac. Only a youngster, the Wanderer’s striker looks to be a class act in the making with his speed and skill the difference in a game that could have so easily gone the other way. Keep an eye out for the Gunners midfielder Tom Corte. A hardworking youngster he has a very bright future in front of him.

Ryde City U/21's shooting blanks! - Ryde City U/21's 0 drew Hajduk Wanderers 0 at Magdala Oval Sunday 30 June 2002-06-30. It was a day that provided sunshine and the wind but no goals for either team. A ball playing Hajduk Wanderers team had the better of the first half, but really lacked the firepower upfront. In contrast the Ryde City team lacked cohesion in keeping possession of the ball but had all the firepower upfront. Ryde City welcomed back Adam Israel after a 14-week layoff through injury. Adam played for the first 45 minutes and will regain match fitness with a few more matches. The first half found Hajduk Wanderers keeping possession of the ball without making any inroads to put Ryde City keeper Marcus Moscos under any pressure. Left midfielder Tim Simpson in the 30th minute went on a mazy run down the left flank and fired a shot towards the left top hand corner, however a brilliant stretched save by the Hajduk Wanderers keeper tipped the shot over the bar. In the 37th minute a corner for Ryde City found defender Dave Provan rocketing a header against the cross bar, back into play and a frenzy of shots on goal finally went out for a goal kick. With Ryde City constantly attacking in Hajduk Wanderers own half, Cameron Jones nearly finished the first half with a powerful drive from 30 metres, skimming over the cross bar. The second half saw Ryde City looking more composed on the ball, keeping possession and threatening to score. After a quick counter attack by Hajduk Wanderers, Ryde City defender Luke Salkeld was sent off for his second professional foul in the 60th minute. Ryde City continued to dominate for the next ten minutes of the game. In the 73th minute Ryde City Captain Darren McKee took off with a solo run through the middle of the field dribbling past the defence but was denied by a great body save by the Hajduk Wanderers keeper. Hajduk Wanderers began to use their extra man advantage for the remainder of the game but did not have the killer instinct when it counted. It was Will Mailer's final game for Ryde City this year as he is heading over to the United States to further his University education and experience playing football in the US. On behalf of the U/21s we all wish Will the very best. Please note I apologised for an earlier report that against Fraser Park on Sunday 16th July Mudar Sultan had scored a goal when it was in fact Tim Simpson (Report By Simon Turner)

| REPORT | MACARTHUR RAMS 1 (Martin Bourke 43') drew with RYDE CITY 1 (Greg Collins 71') At Lynwood Park
'RAMS AND GUNNERS DRAW ACROSS THE BOARD' - All three grades drew at Lynwood Park near Campelltown as a fine day drew into a cold evening. In the 1st grade the old cliche about a game of two halves played out as Macarthur dominated the first and got it's goal just before half time from Peter Burns, and Ryde came back in the 2nd to get one by Greg Collins. Macarthur probably had the better of play but Ryde the chances. Both teams started out brightly enough, using wide play and in the 8th min Robert Angievski for the Rams got behind the Ryde defence but his strike passed Peter Sestak in the Ryde goal but also the goal itself. Ryde was soon on the defensive and in the 13th min Macarthur hit the upright with a soft shot and it rebounded into play. Ryde's Greg Collins got a long ball over to Andy Stratford on the right whose header was just palmed wide for a corner kick. In the 38th min the Rams had the ball in the Ryde net however the referee ruled an illegal challenge on the keeper. In the 43rd min Martin Bourke scored for Macarthur after they had applied sustained pressure. The scrappy half ended after Damian Brown for Ryde had his shot from the right palmed clear. The second half opened with Ryde pushing up and in the 54th min Andy Stratford forced the ball past the keeper and into the net but the whistle had gone for a foul. 6 mins later Ben Burrows lobbed the ball just over from 10m after the keeper spilled a high ball. Although Macarthur struck back with a long speculator which sailed over the crossbar a min later Ryde had the ball in the net again in the 65th min but were ruled offside. After some good pressure work by Cormack Begley on the left Ryde won a corner on the right in the 71st min. Greg Collins met an Andrew Nolan corner at the near post and steered his header past a stranded Sasha Bozic, who had a great game otherwise. Again Begley got up on the left and from his cross first Stratford then Collins had shots blocked by the defence. Ryde continued to press but could not get another goal.
Best for Ryde: Sestak, Stratford, Corti, Portelli, Begley. The Squad: 20 Peter Sestak, 2. Andy Stratford, 4. Erkin Elverin, 5. Robbie Grubba, 6. Greg Collins, 11. Cormack Begley, 12. Rob Portelli, 19. Tom Corti, 15. Ben Burrows (14. Andrew Nolan 70'), 8. Damian Brown (10. Scott Dixon 88') , 17. Eddie Giraldo. Yellow Card: Robbie Grubba 84'. Disappointing draw for Ryde City U/21's! - Ryde City U/21's 2 (Bill Tsioumas 20th/80th) drew Macarthur Rams 2 at Lynwood Park Campbelltown on Saturday 22 June 2002. The current leaders of the competition travelled down to Campbelltown to play against the former leaders of the competition resulting in a score draw on a very cold night.
It was a game of two halves with Macarthur Rams having the most of possession but Ryde with the scoring chances in the first. In the second half in was total dominance in both possession and scoring opportunities for Ryde City. In the 20th minute John Fotiadis took a long throw-in from the right wing into the six yard box finding Mudar Sultan outjumping two defenders to flick the ball behind, there was confusion between the goalkeeper and defenders involving a scramble with Bill Tsioumas picking up the loose ball and shooting into the net. Five minutes later Macarthur Rams equalised with a complete breakdown in the Ryde City midfield, Macarthur Rams involving two players of their players simply ran down through the middle and had shot from the centre of the 18-yard box to find the net. Within two minutes Macarthur Rams scored from a corner, after a header had hit the crossbar, the ball fell nicely for the attacking player to shoot through a mass of bodies. Soon after a tactical change in resulted a swap between a striker and midfielder seemed to have settled Ryde City, with the remainder of the half an even affair. The second half was played mostly in Macarthur Rams half, with Ryde City retaining most of the possession and scoring opportunities. In the 60th minute the Macarthur Rams keeper denied Ryde City midfielder Muder running through the midfield shooting just outside the 18 yard box after an excellent string of passes between Ryde City midfielders. In the 70th minute Fotiadis broke down the left wing and crossed into the goal mouth and a reflex action by a Macarthur Rams defender handling the ball resulted in a penalty. The penalty was taken by Fotiadis but saved by the keeper. With the match intensifying Tsioumas in the thick of things up front turning two players in side the 18-yard box but rocketed a shot over the bar in the 75th minute. Five minutes later excellent work by Jason Vella turning two midfielders inside out put through ball to Tsioumas turning his defender and sprinted into the box and with clinical finishing scored inside the bottom left hand side of the goal post. With Ryde city pressing for a winner Macarthur Rams resorted to niggling play but it was Ricky Ward for Ryde City being sent from the field in the 80th minute after sliding into the Macarthur Rams keeper. With 10 minutes remaining Ryde City created many chances but the winner did not come. Best for Ryde City were Captain David Provan and Billy Tsioumas. (Report by Simon Turner)

| REPORT | RYDE CITY 2 (Greg Collins 50', Tom Corti 73') drew with FRASER PARK 2 ('Kindness' (Kire Agwu) 39', Derek Poimer 61') at Magdala Park
'RYDE SNATCH ANOTHER DRAW' - The day had turned from almost summerish to a biting north west wind by the time the 1st Grade kicked off in front of a small crowd. The high ball Andy Stratford knocked into the wind in the 1st min gave some indication of what was to come. A scrappy first half saw Fraser Park lead at the break, but they had the better of play as well with Tony Farria getting a stinging shot on target in the 15th min. Ryde's former Fraser Park goalkeeper Peter Sestak parried it away for Robbie Grubba to push over the line for a corner, and Ryde were forced to concede another corner which was taken by Adam Snyder and lobbed into the area where the Nigerian Kindness was just beaten to the ball by Sestak. Ryde's attacks however were breaking down due to the wind and Fraser Park had several more attempts blocked before Erkin Elverin put a free kick onto Andy Stratford's head. Alas Stratford lobbed the header just over the crossbar. With Ryde trying to push up, Fraser Park got a breakaway and, although Sestak parried the shot Kindness, latched onto the ball from the attempted clearance and slotted it past Sestak from the right into the left side of the goal. Ryde's only chance in the remainder of that half was an Andrew Nolan freekick which curled away from the keeper but Andy Stratford could only head wide. Not a great 45 mins of football, indeed the bushfire burning across the Lane Cove River was a diversion. The second half gave more joy to the spectators with Kindness shotting over from 15m in the 48th min followed a min later by Damian Brown for Ryde receiving after a good run to beat the offside trap but he wasted the opportunity by shooting straight at the keeper from 25m. Ryde kept on the pressure and after Nolan had put in a cross from the left to see the keeper punch out the ball which was from sent back by Ryde. In the melee Rob Portelli got a back header to Greg Collins who put it away to level the score in the 50th min. In the 58th Tom Corti sent one high and wide after some good lead up work by Ryde. Fraser Park picked themselves up and in the 51st min Derek Poimer pounced on some hesitancy in the Ryde defence to score. Ryde to their credit kept at it and in the 73rd min midfielder Tom Corti scored the goal of the match with a 30m curling shot which sneaked into the top left of the Fraser Park goal giving their keeper no chance. Fraser Park threw everything into attack and with Tony Farria's pace and Derek Poimer's experience it was no wonder that both Erkin Elverin and Cormack Begley were entered into the Referee's book - in fact to be unbiased red would have been no surprise but this was another average display by an experienced Referee. Fraser Park should have grabbed back the lead in the 83rd min when Adam Snyder missed from all of 8m from a fine cross and with only the keeper to beat. Ryde's last gasp was a Rob Portelli run in the 87th min but he waited too long to release the ball and was caught in possession.
Best for Ryde: Sestak, Corti, Portelli, Giraldo, Elverin. The Squad: 20 Peter Sestak, 2. Andy Stratford, 4. Erkin Elverin, 5. Robbie Grubba (3. Paul Watkins 53'), 6. Greg Collins, 11. The U21 won 5-2, with goals by Scott Dixon 3, Mark Williamson 1, and Modar Sultan 1. U19 lost 0-2 (Report by Chris Dunkerley).

| REPORT | STANMORE HAWKS 2 (Jim Melissourgos 44', Eric Hristodoulou 77') were defeated by RYDE CITY 3
(Rob Portelli 12', 17', Damian Brown 83') At Arlington Oval
'GUNNERS BULLS-EYE ON HAWKS' - The Arlington pitch was passed for play but was very chopped up and bumpy which reduced the opportunities for fluent play. After the right smacking Stanmore gave Ryde at Lambert Park in the 3rd round it may be that they were complacent - certainly despite a surprising front line of Brown and Portelli Ryde took full advantage of any that existed as they ran away to lead 2-0 after 17 minutes thanks to two fine goals by the under-rated Rob Portelli. After Andy Stratford, playing behind the front two, had shot wide in the 6th min, he again was involved in play in the 12th minute. Stratford knocked the ball out to the right to Damian Brown who played it back into the box. Rob Portelli had made his run perfectly and was on hand to slot the ball home for Ryde's 1st goal. 5 mins later Stratford was again involved, pushing the ball out to Andrew Nolan on the left who crossed to the far side of the goal for Portelli to shoot easily past the Stanmore keeper. Stanmore however battled back into contention despite Portelli again shooting, this time wide, in the 32nd min. After a mix up with Ryde keeper Peter Sestak being stranded way out on the right side of the field saw Stanmore lob him and the ball bounced danderously across the goalmouth until Robbie Grubba headed clear. From the corner Stanmore headed wide on the right. Ryde were under pressure as the half ound down and Cormack Begley uncharacteristically gave away a free kick on the right. Stanmore put this kick into the mixer and Jim Melissourgos rose to head strongly into the net. After the break Stanmore continued to exert pressure with Sestak saving a header and a free kick being hit over the crossbar, however Ryde had it's own chance when Stratford was put through on the right and closing on goal he tried to pass it rather than testing the keeper. In the 66th min more pressure from Stanmore as over a dozen players contested a Stanmore free kick which landed in the Ryde goal area. In the 77th min Begley again gave away a freekick under pressure and the experienced Eric Hristodoulou struck a beautiful kick over the wall and past Sestak from 20m. Ryde didn't wilt. 6mins later Erkin Elverin took a freekick on the right and floated it to the far left of the Stanmore goal, where Modar Sultan headed it back in and in the crush Damian Bown was credited with a goal to Ryde, although it may have been Tom Corti. In the 85th Modar Sultan was put through on the right and crossed to Stratford on the left who struck the ball well but wide. One min later Sultan broke free and shot weakly at the keeper. Ryde weathered the last few mins for a very creditable away win. Best for Ryde: Grubba, Stratford, Portelli, Elverin, Sestak. Ryde squad: 20 Peter Sestak, 2. Andy Stratford, 4. Erkin Elverin, 5. Robbie Grubba, 6. Greg Collins (15. Ben Burrows 45'), 11. Cormack Begley, 12. Rob Portelli (16. Modar Sultan 88'), 10. Tom Corti, 14. Andrew Nolan, 8. Damian Brown, 7. Eddie Giraldo. Crowd: 72 (I counted them). That's now 7 points from 4 games and 8th position. The U19's and U21's are now on top. Report: By Chris Dunkerley
'U21 Ryde City Win Puts Them In First place!!!' - U21 Ryde City 1 (Mark Williamson 3rd) beat Stanmore Hawks 0 at Arlington Oval, Sunday June 9, 2002. With the knowledge that Macarthur Rams lost last night, Ryde City understood that a win today would make them the new leaders of the competition. This fact was drilled into the team before the game started. With almost every player having first grade experience, the expectation of this team is high, and so it should be given the quality of players available. The game started on a positive note with the first goal coming in the 3rd minute by Ryde City. A throw-in taken by John Fotiadis on the right, was met by Tim Simpson, after making a great run across the box, to flick a header behind over to the penalty spot for Mark Williamson to curl one home. With the middle of the pitch in an appalling state, pretty football is very difficult to play. With both sets of players trying to play the short ball in the middle of the park and playing unnecessary touches, play was continuously broken down. In terms of possession the first half was an even affair, encouraging for Ryde City was the penetration down the left flank by both Tim Simpson and Ricky Ward. Stanmore had given Ryde City a bit of a headache towards the last ten minutes of the half as they continuously broke down both flanks. The first half ended with Ryde City up 1-0. The second half began as the first half ended with Stanmore on the attack, however after 15 minutes the tide turned with the game more evenly balanced as both sides exposed each other. Both sides had their chances but neither took them. A great effort by Ryde City goalkeeper Marcus Moscos denied Stanmore an equaliser but left him concussed, and he had to be replaced. With ten minutes remaining the game was there for the taking, the pressure was on however no goals were scored. The shock loss last night by Macarthur Rams, and a win by Ryde City Gunners today, has the Gunners leading the competition on goal difference. It was a well-deserved win under a difficult playing surface, but there are more difficult games to come. (report by Simon Turner).

| REPORT | RYDE CITY 3 (Damian Brown 5', Andy Stratford 44' pen, 83' pen) defeated MSC LIVERPOOL 0 At Magdala Park
'NO MERCY FOR LIVERPOOL' - Not the prettiest game you've ever seen however both sides were determined to get something out of it. Although Liverpool never looked like they would defeat the home team, especially after the quick goal after the start and the last min goal before half-time, they did look dangerous on the counter. The improving Ryde defence held up well, with Robbie Grubba marshalling and Cormack Begley his usual solid self. This bottom end of the table clash started in solid drizzle and it sprinkled all game, but the Magdala surface held up. Liverpool, under former Newcastle and Marconi NSL coach Lee Sterrey came out strongly and it was against the run of play when in the 5th min Ryde got forward in numbers and Andy Stratford got over a lobbed cross to Damian Brown in the area, who astutely headed the ball over the stranded MSC keeper. Liverpool regained their composure and again applied pressure, hitting one just wide in the 10th min and again 3 mins later, and a few min later Peter Sestak in goal for Ryde was forced to punch a ball clear. In the 19th min Ryde had the ball in the net but the NSW Refereee of the Year Nick Asargiotis adjudged foul play in the box. The game settled down into a fairly dour midfield battle only relieved by NSW Rep Greg Collins snap shot on the run in the 38th min which went wide. Just as the crowd were checking the time Greg Collins made a surging run into the Liverpool area and was brought down. The penalty was taken cleanly by Andy Stratford for Ryde to have a handy 2-0 lead at the break. The 2nd half was more Ryde's however few on target chances were made. Brown was free in the box after 7 mins but couldn't control, then in the 50th min Collins was one on one with the keeper and could only win a corner. Liverpool had a chance when Sestak punched out and the volley from 20m hit the Robbie Grubba and deflected for a corner. In the 89th min Adrian Papaluca hit a curling shot on target but the keeper did well to cover. Ryde's third goal came from another penalty, with Stratford again easily beating the keeper. A minute later Liverpool had their best chance when Sestak punched out for the rebound to be volleyed from 20m, hitting the right upright and bouncing out of harm. In the 44th min a Rob Portelli snap shot hit the right upright. Ryde deserved their win, and perhaps the corner has been turned for coach Tony Dunn and his team, and the results will come. Ryde Squad: 20 Peter Sestak, 2. Andy Stratford, 4. Erkin Elverin, 5. Robbie Grubba, 6. Greg Collins, 8. Damian Brown (13. Adrian Papaluca 78'), 9. Michael O'Riley (12. Rob Portelli 38'), 11. Cormack Begley, 14. Andrew Nolan, 19. Eddie Giraldo, 17. Tom Corti; Referee: Nick Asargiotis. Crowd: 75 in the rain; Best for Ryde: Grubba, Begley, Elverin, Stratford (Report - Chris Dunkerley).
'GUNNERS BUOYED BY SECOND VICTORY' - Under bleak conditions at Magdala last Sunday, the Ryde City Gunners First Grade team gained its second win of the season in its comprehensive victory over fellow cellar dwellers, MSC Liverpool 3-0. The score was significant in that it was only the second time in twelve matches that Ryde had held the opposition scoreless - the previous time being the first round encounter between the same two sides. Ryde started the match in fine style when captain Andy Stratford spectacularly crossed to new striker Damien Brown in the 6th minute with an overhead scissors cross. Brown met the ball with his head and with MSC keeper Gem Akilli out of the play, directed it over the line and putting the Gunners 1 up. Although playing in cold, wet conditions, both sides played optimistic football, (belying their present positions on the table) and Ryde went further ahead when Brown was crudely tackled in the box. Referee Nick Asargiotis had no hesitation in awarding the penalty, duly converted by Stratford. In the second half, MSC played more purposeful football; clearly, new coach Lee Sterry was feeling his way. Delivered balls from Anthony Driene were well received by experienced players Paul Wearne and Scott Watkins but with a Gunners defence dominant, especially Robbie Grubba, Erkin Elverin and livewire Greg Collins holding sway, and moving the ball upfield, all MSC attacks came to nought. Finally, Andy Stratford put the issue beyond doubt in the 81st minute when the referee awarded Ryde another penalty and allowing the Gunners coaching staff to breathe a little more easily for the time being. Ryde have now taken five points from their last four games and may just have turned the corner, whilst MSC can continue to look at the wooden spoon. Ryde's Under 21's won convincingly yet again 4-1, while the Under 19's also won 4-1, cementing their place at the top of the ladder. Next week, Ryde travels to Arlington Oval to meet the Stanmore Hawks on Sunday (From the club - George Moscos).
'U21's WIN AGAIN' - U/21's Ryde City 4 (Darren McKee 42nd, Bill Tsioumas 50th /60th , David Provan 70th) beat MSC Liverpool 1 at Magdala Oval Sunday 2 June 2002. It was a meeting of two sides, one pushing towards top of the table and the other trying to break away from the bottom of the table. Ryde City boys in yellow and blue produced a result that will see them maintaining their push for higher honours. The first half was a display of rushed and hurried passages of play by Ryde City that was continuously broken down by themselves. With the wind and rain behind their backs many passes went astray from the back with long aimless balls forward bypassing the midfield. With no willingness for the midfield to be included by both sides, neither side retain possession of the ball for very long. Ryde City defence comfortably held any attack Liverpool tried to conjure. The first goal of the game arrived in the 42nd minute from a corner, Mark Williamson flicking a header to Captain Darren McKee to slot home. The second half produced a more settled performance by Ryde City against a classless opponent. The introduction of Scott Dixon and John Fotiadis on the right hand side of the pitch produced an immediate effect. Within the first five minutes, Fotiadis produced a cross from the right wing finding Bill Tsioumas in the six yard box to find the net. Five minutes later a relieved Tsioumas was at it again firing home a loose ball in the goal mouth to take Ryde City 3 nil up. Many scoring opportunities went to waste as MSC Liverpool continued to crumble. In the 65th minute Dave Provan found the back of the net from a corner. MSC Liverpool did not threatened Ryde City in the remainder of the game, but did managed a goal in the 80th minute via a dubious penalty decision. In as many weeks running there were solid and consistent performances by Captained Darren McKee, Mark Williamson, and David Provan. Congratulations to the whole team. (Report by Simon Turner)

| REPORT | RYDE CITY 0 lost to AC UNITED 1 (Ben Price 83') At Magdala Park
'AC GRAB POINTS IN STOP START GAME' - After the other grades had won the Ryde fans were encouraged by a first half that had Ryde ahead on points, or at least on chances made, however the pendulum swung the other way in the 2nd half. In a game that was not fiery but nevertheless stop-start due to Referee Kevin Humphreys attachment to his whistle, AC's Ben Price made the most of his opportunity in the 78th, to ghost around the left side of an advancing, square, and bunched Ryde defence to knock the ball easily past Peter Sestak for what proved to be the only goal of a somewhat disjointed game. It started well enough with Andrew Nolan making a fine run on the left, beating a defender and getting a cross in but the attacker's shot was deflected. From the corner the ball evaded all until it cleared to Andy Stratford whose shot missed on the left side. Ryde were on top for the first 30 mins with AC not penetrating far enough. In the 28th min probably Ryde's best chance came when after a good attack by Ryde AC failed to clear and Michael O'Rielly hit a forcefull 10m volley which cannoned off the crossbar. In the 33rd min Andrew Nolan had a header but it was too soft and intercepted by a defender. In the 2nd half both teams battled from end to end as the yellow card tally mounted. AC managed to manufacture two chances with a overhead scissor kick causing no grief, and a shot across goal. In the 80th min Ryde O'Rielly hit a long cross from deep but it outran substitute Mark Williamson. After the AC goal Williamson and Ben Burrows went up against the keeper and out the ball in the net but it was judged a foul. AC almost made it two with a free header over and a shot straight at Sestak. There was not much between the teams but as fate would have it AC stay in the top 5 and Ryde struggle to stay away from the spoon. One aspect of the game other than the refereeing was bad for both teams - AC's 2nd string keeper broke 2 ribs (after they lost their 1st choice injured earlier in the seaosn, and for Ryde Andy Stratford went off with knee trouble. Referee: Kevin Humphreys. Crowd: 150 Best for Ryde: Begley, O'Reilly, Grubba. Squad: 20. Peter Sestak, 2. Andy Stratford (Beb Burrows 42'), 3. Paul Watkins, 4. Erkin Elverin, 5. Robbie Grubba, 6. 'AC SHORT CIRCUIT GUNNERS' - Ryde City Gunners First Grade Super League soccer team lost to visitors AC United 1-0 at Magdala last Sunday in what proved to be very close encounter. From the outset, with both sides giving no quarter (and with the referee stifling free flowing play with somewhat enthusiastic whistle blowing), a single goal promised to be the end result. And so it eventuated. Indeed, the first half was less than absorbing, punctuated only by a solitary incident. In the 28th min, striker Michael O'Reilly gave Ryde hope when he blasted a volley past a desperate AC 'keeper, only to see it rebound off the crossbar. The second half saw more of the same, in dispersed with some tame tackling and earning the ire of the referee yet again, this time with yellow card additions. AC United have the habit of scoring winning or drawing goals in the last ten minutes and today's game was no exception to this rule. Ben Price made the most of his opportunity in the 80th minute to come from deep and pick up a loose ball. With the Gunners defence appealing for offside, Price side footed a drive past Peter Sestak for what proved to be the only goal of the match. Desperation came late for Ryde and even though aided by the referee's desire to extend the game by five minutes, they could not penetrate the stubborn and unforgiving AC defence. There was not much between the teams yet Ryde stay tenth whilst AC celebrate with the top five. In other matches, the Under 21's returned to the winning vein with a stirring 2-1 victory, placing them second; while the high flying Under 19's extended their lead at the top with a 2-0 victory. Next Sunday, the Gunners entertain MSC Liverpool at Magdala (From the Club - George Moscos).
Ryde City U/21's win in a thriller! - Ryde City 2 (Darren McKee, Mark Williamson) beat AC United 1 at Magdala Oval Sunday 26 May 2002. With Ryde City and AC United amongst the leaders of the competition, a tough game was expected. Both teams did not disappoint in what was an exciting game. With the first half an even affair, AC United got the points on the board with a great goal from their left back, after making a run down the left wing and cutting into the box a shot curled around to the right hand side of the goal. The first twenty minutes of the second half Ryde city applied constant pressure on the AC United goalkeeper. In the 50th minute Mark Williamson was fouled in the 18-yard box and Captain Darren McKee converted from the spot. In the 65th minute a cross in from the right hand side by John Fotiadis found Mark Williamson heading from an acute angle home the winner past the Ac United keeper. AC United were relentless in their quest for an equaliser, wave after wave of attack came, but a determined Ryde City defended well with the occasional counter attack. In what was a difficult game, it was a great effort by both team but the win was well deserved by Ryde City. (Report by Simon Turner)

| REPORT | ROCKDALE CITY SUNS (Denis Alilovic 46' pen) drew with RYDE CITY 1 (Mark Williamson 32') At Illinden Sports Centre
'RYDE FLY NEAR THE SUNS' - At a sunny but bleak and windy Illinden Sports Centre the Gunners snatched a 1st half goal which stunned the home team and shocked the home fans. With the strong wind making all ball movements problematic the game took quite a while to settle down, with Rockdale trying out the wind assist against Peter Sestak's keeping skills. In the 16th min Malcolm Bideau for Rockdale shot into a mass of players in the Ryde area, and just as it looked that the ball was cleared it was knocked back in again with Peter Sestak grasping it as the wind propelled it toward his goal line. Ryde was trying to get wide and hit in floating crosses into the wind, however in the 20th min Mark Williamson got forward in the middle and receiving the ball he found three markers so slipped the ball out to Ben Burrows. Burrows shot strongly but the wind took it wide on the right. Rockdale were in no mood to be generous and in the 23rd min Andrew Nolan had to clear off the line after sustained pressure, which continued. In the 32nd min however Ryde had the ball quickly wide on the right with Andy Stratford getting a lovely cross in to Burrows who shielded the ball ond kicked it overhead however it came down propelled by the wind into the Rockdale penalty area. Bouncing around Mark Williamson who had gone down at a first attempt to strike, slotted the ball home to give Ryde a surprise lead and the small sprinking of away fans huge delight! Despite weathering some determined play Ryde were able to keep their shape and last out the first half even getting a late shot from Williamson which the keeper scrambled to hold. After the break delight turned to horror as Tom Corti was judged to handle in the box within the first min and received a yellow card. The penalty was taken expertly by Denis Alilovic and the game was back level. Rockdale attacked solidly for most of the half, but the Ryde combined tenaceous defending and a smart offside trap, with some astute counterattacking play to relieve the pressure many times. Best chances as the half wore on were to Greg Collins who made a run into the Rockdale area and shot well and Nick Bosevski for Rockdale who blasted one over from 20m. The draw was a just result on a weekend when there were some surprise results. Referee: Boyd McGregor; Crowd: 700; Ryde squad: Sestak, Stratford, Watkins (Dixon 88'), Elverin, Conti, Grubba, Nolan, Begley, Papaluca (Fotiadis 80'), Burrows, Williamson (Collins 59').
'GUNNERS PARTIALLY ECLIPSE SUNS' SHINE' - In what can only be described as blustery and swirling conditions, the Gunners took on the league leaders, the Rockdale Suns, on Sunday (…how appropriate…) and tamed the high flyers with an unexpected draw. The 1-1 result was a fair one as both sides tried hard to battle the same adversary - the wind - at the Illinden Sports Centre. Ryde displayed purpose and focus as they set about their task, clearly determined to leave Rockdale with some value from the contest. Indeed, it was Ryde who struck first in the 32nd minute when livewire striker Mark Williamson sent a ball with his first stab over the Suns' line. Referee Boyd MacGregor, not certain as to whether the ball had crossed, allowed play to continue until Williamson made sure of the issue with a second attempt during the goalmouth scramble. However, the assistant referee was already on his way to half way, having seen the ball cross the goal line with the first strike. This goal clearly stunned the home team and shocked the home fans(looking more like frozen icy poles as they hugged the fence and each other to stop from freezing and who greeted their side leaving at half time with derision). But their fickleness turned, with the blowing of the second half whistle, as young Ryde defender Tom Conti was judged to handle in the box in the 46th minute and received a yellow card for his desperation. Dennis Alilovic deceived the Gunners' 'keeper with his placement and the scores were level. From then on, it was Ryde's turn to defend but tenacious defence and use of the offside trap saved their bacon. Late changes John Fotiadis and Scott Dixon (the latter back from knee injury) did little to spark the Gunners, although in defence of both, their injection was far too late to cause real damage. Ryde's best player, Andy Stratford tried tirelessly to impregnate the Rockdale defence on numerous occasions but to no avail. It was encouraging to see that the Gunners tried to weather the conditions (!) with some astute counterattacking play to relieve the pressure many times but Rockdale's experience was their brick wall. Still under the circumstances, 1-1 was a pleasing result for the Gunners who can take solace in gaining positive results in their last two matches. Maybe they have turned the corner…
Disappointment for the Under21's, losing 3-1, even though dominating the play; while Tony Candy's brilliant Under19's showed why they are the promise of the Gunner's future, going to the top of the table with a rousing 6-3 win. Next Sunday, the Gunners host AC United at Magdala. (From the club - George Moscos)
'U21's lose to Rockdale !!!!!!!' - Ryde City 1 lost Rockdale 3 at Rockdale Sports Centre on Sunday 19 May 2002
Conceding two goals in the first half Ryde City gave Rockdale the game. Two goals in the first half for Rockdale were from very ordinary defending. There was a lack of bite in the heart of the defence that contributed to the lack of direction and cohesion throughout the team. Despite several opportunities to score goals Ryde City ended the half two goals to nil down. In the second half Ryde City dominated the game, controlling the game with large possession of the ball. Despite many scoring opportunities the vital goal never came. Rockdale scored another soft goal, after a terrible mishap in defence that allowed a header to find the back of the net from the 18 yard box. Despite this, it was encouraging to see a character in the side to keep playing, playing with some composure that combined risk taking for the search of finding that goal. A goal did come, from Ricky Ward slotting home a cross from the right in the 90 minute. The loss has taken Ryde City sliding down the ladder, but the belief is that this team is a talented team who will provide positive results in the coming weeks (Report from Simon Turner)

| REPORT | RYDE CITY 3 (A Stratford 8' pen, 70', B Burrows 88') drew with SYDNEY UNIVERSITY 3 (R Smithies 36', G Boyd 45', J McNinnamee 54') At Magdala Park
'STUDENT SCARE' - The two promoted teams squared off for what promised to be an even contest, and so it proved. Ryde didn't give away 3 goals in the 2nd half this time but did over a 20 mins spell around the half-time break. The 'students' gave them a big scare, pegging back Ryde's early lead that had come from a penalty, well taken by Andy Stratford, and then ran away to a 3-1 lead by the 54th min. It took Ryde a bit to get back into the game but a sweet header slotted away past the keeper by Stratford in the 70th min gave new heart to the home side. Earlier in the 36th min leading goal scorer Rob Smithies latched onto a cross from the left to hammer it on the turn past Peter Sestak in the Ryde goal and into the top right corner of the net. With Ryde pushing to get back in front before the break they missed two chances only to see University's Boyd strike the underside of the crossbar, and the ball bounced into the goal and out again. The assistant flagged for the goal despite protestation from Cormack Begley who was on the line to clear. After the break Ryde pushing up failed to secure the offside trap convincingly on their left and after a disputed decision against offside Jason McNinnamee scored a side footed goal to run to 1-3. Ryde, as it was said, came back and after the Stratford goal, peppered the Uni keeper with shots however it was only Ben Burrows in the 88' min scored a poachers goal from close range after some wonderful team play. An exciting finish with both teams deserving a point.
' GUNNERS AND UNI EVEN STEVENS ' - Ryde City Gunners Super League side drew Sydney University 3-3 at the picturesque Magdala Field last Sunday in what proved to be an absorbing game for the small band of loyal supporters who were happy to do something different on Mother's Day. With pressure on both sides to perform, the Gunners took the early lead after referee Mark Hester saw an indiscretion in the Uni penalty box. Gunners captain Andy Stratford took the kick and sent the Uni goalkeeper the other way to put the Gunners ahead. Undaunted, Stewart Porter's boys put their thinking caps on (being Uni students…) and pressured the Ryde defence that has been somewhat wanting in the past weeks. Ryde should have known that you don't give Rob Smithies, the experienced Uni goal poacher a sniff and yet in the 35th minute a cross from ex-Ryde midfielder Tyrone Lara found Smithies between two defenders. The deftly hooked the cross on the volley and deceived Peter Sestak, caressing the net all the way down as it floated past him. It looked as if "even stevens" would be the order of the day at half time also, but Gordon Boyd had other ideas. Latching on to a defensive lapse, he shot the ball past Sestak and it came down on the underside of the bar. With both the referee and assistant referee on the spot, the goal was allowed. Worse was to come for the Gunners in the second half as in the 56th minute, an unmarked Jason McNinnamee gave a stunned Ryde goalie no chance, pushing the ball just wide of his sprawled body. To their credit, Ryde showed determination and grit as they came back and a 70th minute well placed header by Stratford on the far post gave the Gunners a glimmer of hope. John Fotiadis was almost through six minutes later but his legs were unceremoniously removed as he streaked gaolward. For his attempt, the Uni defender, Greg Buddeis, was sent off and Ryde pressed their advantage. Ben Burrows became the Ryde hero when he blasted home after a goalmouth melee, satisfying the Ryde crowd…but only just! Both coaches, Tony Dunn for Ryde and Stuart Porter for Uni felt it was fair result under the circumstances but that much work still needs to be done.
Great results for Ryde in other games as Simon Turner's Under 21's won 5-2 while the consistently impressive Tony Candy' coached Under 19's demolished Uni 4-1. (From the club - George Moscos)
Next Sunday, the Gunners take on the league leaders Rockdale at Illinden Sports Ground.
' U21's WIN AGAIN' - Ryde City 5 (Mark Williamson, Tim Simpson (2), Ricky Ward, Bill Tsioumas) beat Sydney University 2 - at Magdala Oval on Sunday 12 May 2002
With three straight wins in as many weeks the U/21 overcame complacency against lower placed Sydney University to finish strongly. Talks at training sessions this week focussed on the importance of a win against Sydney University on pushing for a place higher in the competition ladder. Noticeable patterns are occurring with the U/21's each week, they allow the opposition to get on top early on in the first and second half of the game and then persistently turn the tables on the opposition. In the first 10 minutes of the game sloppy marking allow Sydney University to score their first goal of the game. Many chances went begging for Ryde City with great passages of play involving the whole team playing from the back to the front with one and two touch passing. Finally former Sydney University striker Mark Williamson and midfielder Tim Simpson showed their teammates how to score with three wonderful goals to take Ryde City 3-1 up at half time. The second half was a repeat of the first with Sydney University taking advantage of a sleepy Ryde City to score from a penalty. It took a magnificent Ricky Ward free kick to send the U/21's back into action with the final goal of the game scored by Billy Tsioumas to round off another dominant performance by Ryde City. The coaches and players Man of the Match went to Tim Simpson for his all round attacking efforts and Erkan Elveren was not far behind with his visionary passing and defensive work. Next week game is against lower placed Rockdale, a win is a must as three points separate the top six teams with Ryde City currently in second place on goal difference (Report by Simon Turner).

| REPORT | DULWICH HILL 2 (A Salim 78', J Rousseau 89') defeated RYDE CITY GUNNERS 0 At Arlington Oval
'GUNNERS AWAY LOSS A FIRST' - In a disappointing result, the Ryde City Gunners lost their first away game of the season last Sunday; going down to Dulwich Hill 2-0 at Arlington Oval. The omens appeared unfavourable for the Gunners when, thirty seconds into the game, livewire forward Ohan Dincer eluded a slow to react Gunners defence and beat Peter Sestak with a hard drive, luckily for the goalie, the ball rebounded at right angles to shave the other post without registering. At the other end, Ryde looked threatening once they settled and Will Mailer was unlucky not to score in the 6th minute, as was State Rep. Greg Collins who turned and shot wide fifteen minutes later. The first half then became a series of attempts for each side to dominate but it was lacklustre and frustrating. Set moves were predictable and near misses by both teams at the end of the half epitomised the performance being played out. The second half was however a different story as Dulwich Hill raced goalwards, exasperating a struggling Ryde defence, in their desire to get a result. The break point came in the 78th minute when an unmarked Ali Salim picked up a cross from the right to wrong foot a stranded Sestak. From then on, it was all Dulwich Hill and in the 83rd minute Sestak again was grateful to see experienced sweeper Robbie Grubba clear off his line. In desperation, Ryde pushed up but with both Ben Burrows and Modar Sultan well contained, the chances they had usually ended outside the box. Great saves from the Dulwich Hill 'keeper John Rodriguez, also thwarted any chance the Gunners had of salvaging a draw. Cruel irony was the Gunners reward as in the 95th minute, Dulwich Hill notched a second just as the referee blew the final whistle. This was a game the Gunners should have won but without 100 per cent efforts from some players, they were beaten before they began by the more determined home side.
The Under 21's brought a smile to the face of new coach Simon Turner with a classy 4-1 victory while the highlight was the great win by Tony Candy's Under 19's who shocked league leaders Dulwich Hill 1-0. (From the club: George Moscos).
U/21's Ryde City 4 (D.McKee 12th, M.Williamson 62nd, A.Papaluca 78th/83rd) beat Dulwich Hill 1 (D.Rosa) at Arlington Oval - 'Too Good For Dulwich Hill': The game typified for the second week running that the longer the game goes the stronger Ryde City are. Despite a bumpy pitch good football was displayed by Ryde City, with two wide players Erkan Elveren and Ricky Ward encouraging in getting behind the opposition. One passage of play by Ward earned a penalty that was well taken by captain Darren McKee to take Ryde City up 1-0 in the 12th minute of the game. The remainder of the first half and 15 minutes into the second half Ryde City remained in second gear. Sensing Dulwich Hill pressing too far forward early on the first half Ryde City press forward with a wonderful piece of play involving a cross from right back Elveren to find striker Mark Williamson making a diagonal run into the box to head home in the 62nd minute. Within two minutes Ryde City conceded a soft goal losing possession of the ball just outside the 18-yard box. From the restart Ryde City proceeded to dominate the game. Two goals from energetic Adrian Papaluca in the 78th and 83rd minute typified the attacking passage of play Ryde City were producing at this stage of the game. Defensively there were good overall performances by keeper Marcus Moscos, defenders David Provan (returning from injury), Craig Young, Eddie Giraldo, and midfielder Darren McKee. Midfielder Tim Simpson, striker Omar Makki and replacements Billy Tsioumas, Matthew Pearman, and Brad Page also produced sound games to round off a well deserved 4-1 victory that puts the team into the top five. Next week the biggest challenge Ryde City face is complacency against lower placed Sydney University, a challenge that should see the team press for higher status in the competition ladder. | REPORT | RYDE CITY GUNNERS 1 (Ben Burrows 41') Lost to HURSTVILLE CRESCENT STAR 3 (Aydin Cetinay 15', 40', Hakan Sevgin 42') At Magdala Park, North Ryde.
'CRESCENT STAR ECLIPSE RYDE' - Former Ryde City striker Aydin Cetinay said "thanks for the hospitality" by knocking in 2 goals against his old club in a game that was 'willing' but perhaps not worth the six cards handed out. Basically it was a pumped up Hurstville that came at Ryde in waves and for most of the 1st half the home team were on the back foot. Markopolous hit a shot in the 13th min which struck Peter Sestak's feet thrust out in defence (not that only time Ryde were saved that way). The first goal came through a penalty given in the 15th min when Cormack Begley was judged to have handled in the box following a breakway from a rare Andy Stratford error, with Ryde under severe pressure, and Cetinay took a fine strike into the top right corner. It was end to end stuff for most of the half and it looked like Ryde would wilt, however they battled on with Will Mailer adding bite in midfield. Just before half time Hurstville lost concentration on a Ryde counter attack and with three yellow shirts in the area and few white ones it was a simple job for Ben Burrows to slot it away past the experienced Steve Tolios. Andrew Nolan may have snatched the lead for Ryde when his 44th min shot taken on the run from 15m was deflected ever so slightly by Tolios's outstrenched fingers and the ball skidded past his left upright. Hurstville came out as they had before and Sestak had to tip a 52nd min shot from Hussein Jomaa over the crossbar. Mailer got a header in off a John Fotiadis cross but it went over the bar. For most of the half however the thin Ryde defensive line up was under constant attack and it was no surprise when after a goalmouth melee Centinay found himself free in the box and slotted it home in the 40th min. Two minutes later another counter attack by Hurstville led to a goal by Hakan Sevgin, and despite some attacking moves by Ryde the game was summed up just before the whistle when Fotiadis had to make a strong run back into defence to clear a certain chance of the feet of the Hurstville player. Hurstville's solid band of travelling supporters went wild and they deserved their win. Ryde is finding it a big step up going back into the Super League but so far have not been outclassed and will cause a few teams grief over the season. Be there to support them! 'GUNNERS SUCCESS DIMMED BY CRESCENT STAR' - In front of a very healthy crowd, visitors Hurstville City Crescent Star demoralised the Ryde City Gunners last Sunday by defeating them 3-1 at Magdala Oval. It wasn't as if the Gunners were outclassed; the matched progressed excitedly for well over 80 minutes with both sides threatening to break a 1-1 deadlock that had eventuated in the first half. But to put it in the words of Ryde Goalkeeper coach Andrew Prentice: " The difference was that they had 24 shots on target to our 8". In the 15th minute, former Gunner Adyn Cetinay put away a penalty after Irish import Cormack Begley was deemed to handle the ball on the line. Ben Burrows evened the score for Ryde after Robbie Portelli had crossed to Burrows, unmarked 6 metres out. Burrows turned and buried the ball past the experienced Crescent Star 'keeper Steve Tolios. Ryde's best chance to increase the score came when a fleet footed Andrew Nolan shot from close range, exacting an excellent save from Tolios as the whistle sounded for half time. For Ryde, the second half was dismal and frustrating. Constant thwarting of incursive runs by the Hurstville city forwards took their toll on concentration and the loss of injured sweeper Robbie Grubba showed as coach Tony Dunn tried to plug the defence. But the dam broke, and in the 83rd minute, Cetinay again emerged from a melee and confusion in front of goal to score. A minute later, substitute Hakan Sergin put the issue beyond doubt by placing the ball past a wrong footed Peter Sestak. Twice in two weeks the Gunners have lost by the same score, disappointing an eager throng of Ryde fans. Maybe next week against Dulwich Hill at Arlington it will be different, as strangely the Gunners seem to do better away from home! The Under 21's caused excitement after scoring in the last minute to beat Crescent Star 3-2, while Tony Candy's Under 19's won 4-1. (From George Moscos at the club)

| REPORT | RYDE CITY GUNNERS 1 (Ben Burrows 22') Lost to MANLY WARRINGAH DOLPHINS 3 (Steve Berry 62', Damien Rosenthal 64', Ryan Griffiths 67') At Magdala Park, North Ryde.
'RYDE'S FIVE MINUTES OF HORROR' - The Northern Spirit connected Dolphins came from the Peninsular to Magdala Park, North Ryde looking for a win and after five minutes of horror for Ryde City they had no trouble going away with one, winning three (3) goals to one (1) over the Northern Districts side. Rookie Dolphins' coach and ex Socceroo Robbie Slater brought in Ryan Griffiths to his side in a left midfield position and despite being without striker Hamilton Thorpe they looked much too experienced with their several NSL level players for Tony Dunn's injury hit Ryde side. Both sides struggled to penetrate in the first 15 mins but Ryde made the first chance when John Fotiadis pushed the ball through from the right to Andrew Nolan in the centre whose stinging shot was going into the left side of the net however Dolphins keeper Dean McCreath somehow reached out a hand and pushed the ball wide. At this stage the game was even, with Ryde playing on the counter, however the first goal of the game went to the underdogs. Fotiadis again on the right using his speed picked up a through ball from Modar Sultan and headed toward goal blasting a shot on the run. McCreath couldn't hold it and knocked the ball out to Ben Burrows who was following through. Burrows 24th min goal stunned the travelling fans. Ryde ahead - what would happen next? A win would move them as far as 5th on the table! Three mins later Rob Portelli for Ryde was put through however his shot was well held, but slowly the Dolphins got back into the game. Anthony Martin shot from 25m and Peter Sestak in the Ryde goal had to push the ball over the crossbar. As the referee checked the time Phil Moss took one of his legendary free kicks which was courageously charged down by Fotiadis. Manly Warringah came out fired up in the 2nd half and Martin, then Moss, hit shots which went over the crossbar. Ryde were not laying down however mounting dogged defence and even got in a Fotiadis cross from the right from which Burrows snap shot went wide. Now came a 5 min period that had Ryde fans holding their heads in their hands. 62nd min - after sustained pressure from the Dolphins Ryde's defence is at sea and Steve Berry glided in to pick up the ball bouncing around free in the area. 64th min - Damien Rosenthal also shoots, this time from 20m out, after Ryde failed to clear the ball out of defence to a free man. 67th min - The Dolphins get a man free behind the defence on the right and his pinpoint cross connects with Ryan Griffiths head as the young player drifts into the area unmarked and put it past Sestak. Five minutes of horror for Ryde, but jubilation for Manly Warringah. Most fans were asking can Ryde hold out from a whitewash? To Ryde's credit, they regrouped and played out the game with resolution and blunted further chances, making some for themselves in the process. Ryde host Hurstville next week, whilst the Dolphins move up the table host Dulwich Hill.

Report from the Club: 'POLISHED DOLPHINS TOO SLIPPERY FOR GUNNERS' - In this week's local derby, the Manly Warringah Dolphins proved too tough for the Ryde City Gunners in an entertaining match and in front of a sizeable crowd at Magdala Oval. Presenting new signing Ryan Griffiths from the Northern Spirit, the Dolphins showed too much class to upset a Gunners outfit, buoyed by their victory last week over highly placed Hajduk Wanderers. In fact, in the early stages it looked as if an upset was looming as the Gunners pressed hard and only a great save from Dolphins goalie Darren McCreath stopped Andrew Nolan from opening the scoring in the 14th minute. Not to be denied, a sliding Ben Burrows who got to the ball a split second before McCreath, met a cross from Nolan in the 22nd minute on the half volley and put the Gunners one up. Dolphins' coach Robbie Slater sized up the situation at half time and with Griffiths given more room to manoeuvre in the second half, the Gunners' defence was found wanting. In the 62nd minute, ex-NSL player Steve Berry picked up the crumbs from a melee in front of goal to even the score. Two minutes later, Damien Rosenthal placed a ball received from an Anthony Martin cross into the back of the net to put his side ahead; and Griffiths himself put the issue beyond doubt when he met a cross from the left, drilling it past a helpless Peter Sestak with a well placed header. "Those five minutes of lapsed concentration killed us" was Tony Dunn's summation of the game. "But we learnt a lot in the process" he added. Best for the visitors was the classy Griffiths whilst the Gunners were well served by rookie Andrew Nolan and an ever-improving Will Mailer. It was dismal all day for the Gunners as the Under 21's lost 3-0 while the Under 19's went down 1-4 after also earlier leading. Next week, the Gunners take on Hurstville Crescent Star at Magdala on Sunday. (George Moscos)

'HOW THE WEST WAS WON' - "Ryde dominated the favoured western side in the first half and weathered a more determined 2nd half resistance to run out 4-2 winners on Sunday. With the mounting injury toll Ryde Coach Tony Dunn was forced to strengthen his side. He brought in Greg Collins, John Fotiadis, and Modar Sultan (see report on main page). These players made a difference, with Sultan's lanky ranging around the midfield and runs, the width and speed given by Fotiadis, and the depth in defence aided by Collins. They were able supported by Cormack Begley who is fitting into the sytem and gaining in confidence, Will Mailer, and Andrew Nolan. Then return of Andy Stratford had a settling affect also and the two goal tally to Rob Portelli was very welcome! Ryde came out attacking and the talented Ben Burrows had the presence of mind when receiving a ball 25m out to check the keeper was off his line and slotted the ball over Darren Cross in the Wanderers goal in the 5th min (0-1). Ryde continued to press - in the 21st min Portelli got a ball to Burrows in the area but his header was wide, and Nolan hit a long cross from deep to Burrows but he again headed wide. It was this sort of pressure that led to an own goal by Darren Camilleri when a ball was lobbed over Burrows head but carried too far for the defender who headed back over his keeper and into the net (0-2). Ryde dominated the half but portents were there over the last 5 mins when Hadjuk made some chances. The 2nd half was more even with Former Socceroo international Tommy McCulloch having his Hajduk side firing. Even so in the 47th min Fotiadis took a long throw on the right which got into the box to Portelli who hit the ball over the crossbar from close range. In the 65th min with Hajduk up in numbers Steve Jordan got the ball in the area, turned and slotted it deftly past Peter Setak for Hadjuk's first (1-2). Hadjuk got a new lease of life after the goal and Setak was almost caught when a player chased the ball down and he was slow to react. In the 69th min Fotiadis got up on the right and his perfect cross was heading to Burrow's head until Cross made a diving intervention. More Ryde pressure and Burrows on the right kicked the ball over his head and straight to Portelli in the box on the left and he knocked it home (1-3). Hadjuk also threatened and Trent Worrall in the 73rd min hit a 20m shot over over the defence and grazed the underside of the bar and in (2-3). As the game came to a frenzied, end in the 87th min a through ball was chased by Rob Portelli. Cross in the Hadjuk goal came to it but instead of knocking it out to the right or left he slammed it straight into Portelli's head and it rebounded into the net (2-4). A well deserved win to Ryde which gives them confidence for the local northside derby next Sunday.
Report from the Club: 'GUNNERS CONTAIN WANDERERS' MARCH' - In what proved to be a surprise result for all but loyal Gunners fans last Sunday, Ryde City easily accounted for the more favoured Hajduk Wanderers 4-2 at Hajduk Stadium. Playing determined football and with a team bolstered by the return of captain Andy Stratford and new signings Greg Collins, Moda Sultan and John Fotiadis, the Gunners allowed Hajduk little chance to get on top. In the 5th minute, Ben Burrows chipped and out of position Darren Cross in the Wanderers goal to put the Gunners one up. The Wanderers task became more difficult when goalie Cross was again taken to task - this time by his own sweeper Darren Camilleri who glanced a drive into his own goal ten minutes from half time. In the 37th minute Hajduk made two changes in an effort to turn the tide, bringing on experienced players Jordan and Marcerola to try and shake the Hajduk game to life. This almost worked; when replacement Steve Jordan blasted past Peter Sestak in the 65th minute after a period of more aggressive play. Indeed, referee Vic Gauchi handed out a number of yellow cards in the space of fifteen minutes in order to bring the game back on task. But it was the diminutive Robbie Portelli who took the game out of Hajduk's reach, scoring his first in the 78th from a perfect cross and then capitalising on a blunder by Cross to 'falcon' the ball home with seven minutes to go to make the final score 4-2. (Trent Worrall had scored Hajduk's second three minutes earlier). Other teams take note: "Gunners played good football and deserved their win" according to Hajduk coach Tom McCulloch. Next week, the Gunners take on Manly in what promises to be a very entertaining contest at Magdala Field on Sunday. It was a good day all round for the Guuners with Steve Herron's Under 21's drawing 1-1, while Tony Candy's Under 19's drew 2-2. (George Moscos)

| REPORT | 1st Grade: Ryde City 0 v Macarthur Rams 1 (John Kelso 46') At Magdala Park.
'FLEECED BY RAMPANT RAMS' - "Ryde City Gunners slumped to their second loss of the Super League season on Sunday at Magdala Oval to a determined Macarthur Rams who were intent on leaving with nothing short of maximum points. With a makeshift defence already evident at the start, the Ryde boys were further depleted by the ominous and serious looking knee injury suffered in the first half by Scott Dixon. However, the Gunners battled on and by the end of the first half, with the score 0-0, Ryde looked like it might make a game of it. But it was not to be, as the Rams broke through a threatened defence in the 46th minute for John Kelso to tap in past a stranded Peter Sestak in the Ryde goal after a series of defensive errors. The injection of midfielder John McCulloch late in the second half seemed to revive the Gunners as they attacked again and again. But desperate defence and balls too close to the Rams 'keeper made their job of salvaging a draw impossible. It was a game of breaks by the Rams that were consolidated whilst sweeping attacks by Ryde came to nought. Hopefully Ryde stalwarts - skipper Andy Stratford and Erkin Elverin will be fit and well next week but young stars Greg Fuchs and Scott Dixon look like they might be watching for a while yet. Under 21's were less than impressive; losing 1-4 after a series of excellent wins in recent weeks while Tony Candy's Under 19's continued on their winning way, 3-2.
Next Sunday, the Gunners travel to Fairfield to take on the buoyant Hadjuk Wanderers. (Report from George Moscos)

| REPORT | 1st Grade: Fraser Park 1 (Antonio Farria 39') drew with Ryde City 1 (Ben Burrows 15') At Fraser Park - Pitch 7/10, Crowd: 180 est., Referee: Alex Spirovksi 7/10, Game 7/10. 'FRASER PARK WEATHER STORM' - Great game but this is one that Ryde let get away! They dominated for much of the first half and the last 15min, and some of the misses (particularly the Kai Lammert one) were dire! For the first 10-12 mins Ryde pressed but it was Fraser Park through Toni Faria getting behind the defence (and crossing to no-one) who signalled that this would be an end to end game. A minute later Andy Stratford shot from 35m only to see it rebound off the crossbar. In the 16th min Ryde got a high ball into the box, the defence and attack got tangled and the ball bounced free to Ben Burrows who calmly knocked it in from 3m. A 'cross come shot' from the right by Scott Dixon for Ryde was just palmed over the crossbar. On the counter attack Toni Faria got up wide on the left, with a Ryde player only loosely on him, and the former Dolphin used his pace to get free and in the 40th min shot past Peter Sestak and into the left side of the goal. Andy Stratford was subbed injured at half-time. In the second half after two quick chances to Ben Burrows the Jets came at Ryde. Scott Dixon got forward into the box but despite getting the ball he headed wide. Fraser Park were being equally wastefull with shots wide when in shotting range. In the 73rd min Dixon got a fantastic ball from the left to an unmarked Kai Lammert at the edge of the box but the German skied his shot with the keeper stranded. 3 minutes later a cross reached substitute Rob Portelli but despite diving to his right he couldn't get the header on target. Fraser Park had a few chances including a Faria shot on the turn from 30m which just grazed the bar. This should have been 3 points to Ryde but it was a distinct improvement on last week. Best for Ryde - Ben Burrows

| REPORT | 1st Grade: Ryde City 0 v Stanmore Hawks 2 (David Vares pen 38', Neil Phillipou 45') At Lambert Park - Pitch 5/10. Crowd: 150 est. Referee: Johnathon Streater 6/10, Game: 5/10. RYDE MAULED BY HAWKS - Stanmore dominated this match until Ryde's conditioning came to the fore in the last 10 mins, however that was way too late with the Hawks having taken the lead in the 38th min from a well taken David Vares penalty after Ryde keeper Peter Sestak was judged to have fouled an attacker in the area. They added to this just before the break when Neil Phillipou tucked the ball into the net during scrambled goal mouth action. Ryde never looked like pegging Stanmore back and coach Tony Dunn will need to get his largely new side gelling soon. If it hadn't been for some woeful shooting by Stanmore and some "Huguita' like sweeping by Sestak the score would have been greater. Not a match for fans of the beautifull game, on a hot day and a bumpy clumpy pitch. Let's hope next week's away game v. Fraser Park can see the turnaround start. (C Dunkerley) Ryde Squad: 20. Peter Sestak (YC), 2. Andy Stratford (19. Kai Lammert 45'), 3. Paul Watkins, 4. Erkin Everen, 8. Scott Dixon, 7. Will Mailer, 5. Robert Grubba, 9. Greg Fuchs, 15. Ben Burrows (YC), 14. Andrew Nolan, 11. Cormack Begley.
Report from the Club: 'GUNNERS SUCCUMB TO SWOOPING HAWKS' - At Lambert Park on Sunday, the marauding Stanmore Hawks whose talons were sharp and decisive, mauled Tony Dunn's Ryde City Super League side who were buoyant after their first up draw last week.. Attack after attack in the first half was thwarted by uncharacteristic desperate defence as the Gunners tried hard to go into half time on even terms. However this was not to be as first a penalty and then a well executed attack saw the Gunners go in two nil down. In the 38th minute, the referee adjudged Ryde goalie Peter Sestak to have brought down a Hawks player and from the ensuing penalty, Navid Varess made no mistake, clinically beating the stranded 'keeper. In the 45th minute midfielder Neil Phillipou finished off a swift Hawks flight, insuring a comfortable rest for the visitors. A tighter Ryde team matched the Hawks in the second period but the damage had already been done and at this level of football, mistakes can be punished severely. Coach Tony Dunn was clearly disappointed after the match but with the revved up Fraser Park Jets on his plate next Monday cannot afford to rue lastingly a performance that is best forgotten. With this performance out of the way, its go forward time and the Jets better be careful of the wounded Gunner next Monday! A great result for Steve Herron's Under 21's (3-0) sees them shoot up the ladder, whilst last week's winners, Tony Candy's Under 19's lost 2-3. Report: George Moscos
