Here are some herbs that may help with the symptoms of ADHD without
resorting to drugs.
Note: Liquid glycerine extracts are best for kids because they are alcohol-free
and can be disguised in juice or tea. They also work much faster than other
forms.
Catnip
Catnip is a mild sleep aid and relaxant, more commonly known for its use by
Native Americans to treat infant colic. It calms "upset tummies" as
well.
California Poppy
This herb is recommended for hyperactivity and sleeplessness.
Chamomile
It is commonly used to relieve nervous tension and to calm anxiety, especially
in children. It is gentle and safe to use.
Gotu Kola
Gotu Kola is an oriental herb with a mild tranquilizing effect, very effective
at treating mental fatigue and improving memory.
Hops
Hops has been used as an effective sedative and sleep-inducer for centuries. It
can either be taken orally or used as stuffing for a pillow.
Lavender
Lavender is growing in popularity as a sleep inducer. It relaxes and calms the
nervous system to promote restful sleep. Use its essential oil in night time
bath water to promote relaxation or serve up this gentle tea right before
school.
Lemon Balm
Lemon Balm is a lemon-tasting herb that has a mild relaxing effect. It is long
celebrated for its benefits for hyperactive children in Europe, especially when
combined with several other sedative herbs.
Liquorice
When added to herbal teas, it provides a sweet refreshment alternative to juice
and soda.
Linden
Linden is a nervine, anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory herb. It is well known
as a relaxing remedy and in relieving nervous tension.
Passion Flower
Frequently paired with Hops, it act as a sedative, assisting in relaxation and
sleep.
Red Clover
It is considered to be a "blood purifier" and gentle nerve relaxant.
It would facilitate cleansing the blood of toxins/chemicals. Safe to use
long-term.
Skullcap
Often combined with other relaxing herbs, Skullcap is a nerve tonic, relaxant,
and sleep-inducer. Very successful when insomnia is due to worry or nervous
tension.
Stevia
Medicinally, this South American herb is known for normalizing blood sugar
levels and soothing digestive upsets. Incidentally, it is also used throughout the
world as a zero-calorie sugar substitute. That is, everywhere except the U.S.

Valerian Root
Valerian is a nervous system relaxant that is one of the strongest herbal
sedatives. Yet it is non-narcotic and not habit-forming. More on Valerian Root.
Wild Lettuce
Usually mixed with other herbs, this herb, too, is a mild sedative and sleep
aid.
Wild Oats
Wild oats is a nervine tonic and nutritive, strengthening the body under times
of stress. It is used in Germany as a sedative for acute and chronic anxiety.
