Presidents Report - 2008/9

Corporate

On behalf of the membership I would like to thank the committee for their work during the year. The key role in the committee that requires much of the work to be done on a regular and weekly basis is that of the Secretary, closely followed by the Treasurer. These are the roles that look after the corporate responsibilities of the club and are the ones accountable for accurate records that are submitted to the authorities on our behalf. The job of president is a simple one in comparison. Thanks to John and Gary for their great work this year. All records and reports were in to the Licencing Branch on time and to the satisfaction of the police. In the last twelve months the secretary has put in place a consistent approach to completion of the paperwork required to keep the club compliant with regulations and during the coming year this work will be refined and streamlined. I'd like to make a special thanks to Rob as Vice President for a couple of reasons - firstly for stepping in and chairing meetings on my behalf when I was unable to be here, but secondly for developing and maintaining a presence and documents on the WebSite - which he hosts on his own Internet account. Rob has also demonstrated a great eye for detail and has picked up a number of important points in documentation and process and I look forward to Robs continued presence on the committee.

Club Competitions and Safety

From my perspective it has been excellent to see the club competitions and various disciplines attracting more members to the club. The IPSC is increasing in popularity and it was great to see a competition that was organised and attracted shooters form other clubs. This is something I would like to see more of in all the disciplines as the club facilities improve. These open competitions will lead to us all being exposed to better shooters and hopefully will spur us on to improve our own skills.

The Club Captain has done a fine job this year introducing a number of new competitions and the effort is considerable. Devising the competitions, liaising with the police to get permission to put them in place and then organising the shoots is time consuming and requires dedication to get it done smoothly. Graham liaised with the committee and members of the club to set these new competitions up and then get them approved by the committee.

Safety in the club continues to be of paramount importance and it was a credit to all club members that the safety record of the club remains unblemished. The SRO is held accountable for the club safety but it is our collective responsibility to ensure we are all safe - it is the responsibility of every member of the committee and club to call any other member to account on safety issues. With the increased popularity of IPSC the committee passed a number of resolutions in relation to training and assessment of a members' readiness to take on IPSC. To date I am personally satisfied that the safety of the club has been uncompromised and the police are now satisfied with the ranges.

Range Development has progressed extremely well over the year and Bill has overseen the improvements to all ranges in a most competent way and within very tight financial constraints. Range three was closed down by the police for a period last year. The team worked quickly to make the improvements to the range that were required and consequently the range was approved by the police and reopened. Overall there have been improvements in all areas of the facilities including modifications to toilets, the pergola, updated pneumatics for the turning targets and the list goes on. Thanks to Bill and the team that supports him.

General Committee

A vote of thanks to the ordinary members of the committee is also due. We rely on their input and counsel in our decision making process.

General Comments

When I took on the role of president last year there was a degree of discontent and discord in the club, this is something that needs to be said and I made a commitment to work to bring some harmony back to the club during the year and to ensure that all members have a voice that is heard and responded to. My assessment is that we have as team succeeded to move effectively in this direction. There is much more cordiality in the club and a sense of unity. Without unity and team effort the improvements that have occurred in the facilities and the corporate performance of the club could not have been achieved.

I would like to see the improvements continue over the coming year and the club continue to grow and be enjoyed by all of us. The club is here for all of us and the desires of any individual, while they need to be considered certainly must not take precedence over the needs of the club.
