“TAKE” - Man in Word
Under the title “TAKE”, Alan Tulloch has created a body of drawings that represent some of his ‘takes’ on contemporary masculinity.
The drawings reflect something of Tulloch’s valuing of positive transgression as they were created using the Drawing Toolbar in Microsoft Word instead of a standard graphics program such as Illustrator.
Poses were developed in relation to a number of words that are part of Tulloch’s ‘takes’ on masculinity. These title words are most often seen as verbs but can equally act as nouns, allowing a flexibility in the interpretation of images.
The style of representation is seen as a ‘straw man’ approach, using mostly internal line systems to evoke the nature of poses.  In each drawing, about 4 or 5 different line systems are used in conjunction as part of Tulloch’s representation of what he sees as masculine characteristics. In the exhibition, each pose is represented with reformatted lines, using some of the line reformatting options in MS Word.
