A lot has been made of the description that a man may be ‘playing the field’*.It has also been said that if ‘necessity was the mother of invention, play was its father’. Some might even suggest that men have been playing around for too long - don’t give them any more ground.Herein is a connundrum. What are the controls on men’s play?Field
sports are hemmed in by men deciding to limit the field of play by drawing lines on the ground. Are there two characters within the masculine?Field work as shown here, plays with the custom of drawing lines on the ground, developing
ephemeral works that don’t have any directions left to redraw the artwork after the lines fade. The “Lineout
Series”focuses on the process of putting the ball back into play in the game of Rugby Union. |

| * The controversy surrounding sex allegations against particular football players and player culture in Australia is not lost in my
investigations. I hope to go beyond the limits of press coverage to develop a greater reflexivity that aims to understand the connundrum - new ‘lines of limitation’ will only force behaviour underground. |
