“Loom” as a......
‘Suburban Loom’.“Loom”
as an artwork has the potential to be sited in different locations, responding to the character of the area.At ‘palimpsest #5’,
this artwork was installed on a cleared suburban allotment adjacent to the Mildura Arts Centre.Before being used as a home site,
the land was cultivated by the Chaffey family for growing grapes. Constructing “Loom” out of soil from another former vineyard site and Grape Vine Trellis Posts has local relevance.The concrete paving can be seen into the foreground, ‘leading into’ the artwork.After the house had been removed, leaving the land unattended for a number of years, native plants such as saltbush; domestic onion plants and introduced weeds have become the dominant
groundcover. These plants become part of the content of “Loom” as an artwork focussing on land management.
